Hi everyone!

Well, I've had one week of work so far and it's still going well. I realized that this summer is not going to be stressful. For the first time in nearly two years, I'll be able to do a lot more fun stuff than I have previously. What a strange concept!

Admittedly, my "no stress" summer is tempered by school obligations. I had to spend all of Friday night in the law journal office working on something with another student. We were there until midnight, then went back on Saturday morning and put in another 6.5 hours. I think we're mostly finished, but it was pretty crappy to have to squander that much beautiful sunny weekend time being in a window-less basement office. :( Ah well.

However, after all that toiling, I went to a really fun on Saturday night and reconnected with a girl I went to high school with. And the next day (Sunday, today) I went on a 20-mile bike ride with a friend. We toured through his neighborhood (a suburban area good for cycling), then got back to watch the Tour de France preview show on TV and grill brats. It was AWESOME -- bike rides and BBQs are what summer is all about. Actually, I'm going to go with the B theme and say summer is about bike rides, bbq, beer, and buddies. :D This friend is a really serious cyclist, so I felt the pressure to keep up with him and actually rode up two monster hills. Woot! I totally would have walked those suckers if I were by myself. But my muscles are going to be killing me tomorrow, I'm certain of it.

In the week I had off between the end of school adn the start of work, I watched the first season of Battlestar Galactica. LOVE IT. dernhelm87 asked me what the show is about, so I'll describe it here. It's set in a universe where humans, who live on 12 planets governed under one central government, created robots called "Cylons" and then the cylons evolved and rebelled against the humans, leading to a huge war. The war ended, and there were some years of relative peace. At the point where this series starts (this series is a remake of the original one from the 1970s or something), the cylons have evolved to look exactly like humans and they pull off a massive attack on all 12 planets. Their goal was to wipe out the human species, and they almost accomplished it -- we're talking apocalyptic devastation. But an aging battleship survived and the show is about their attempts to fight the cylons and keep the human race from becoming extinct.

Basically, the show incorporates action, human drama, political intrigue, and military tactics. I don't really even think of it as Sci-Fi, just a drama set in space in the same way that Grey's Anatomy is set in a hospital. I think of Firefly the same way, although Firefly is more of a drama/comedy set in space. And the political aspects of Battlestar Galactica remind me of the West Wing.

I feel like such a dork when I tell people I like Battlestar Galactica. Why is this? It's an awesome show! I don't feel self-conscious when I say I love Firefly, or that I like the Harry Potter books (although I don't reveal just HOW much I like them -- that might indeed be scary). But the last two friends that I revealed my Battlestar Galactica adoration to gave me skeptical looks like "Dude, are you sure you want to share this information with me?" I think it's the name of the show -- it totally connotes geeky space fights and Star Trek-esque aliens. Not to diss Star Trek, as I consider myself a fan, although I have to say that the writing, acting, and character development of the Battlestar Galatica are light years beyond the most recent Star Trek series.

Speaking of characters, I love them. There's some wonderful, interesting moral ambiguity with some of them, and since the cylons look like humans there's a constant tension in knowing that someone could turn out to be the enemy. One of my favorite characters to LOOK AT is the delicious Jamie Bamber, although some of the other characters are more interesting story-line wise.

OK, this has been enough fannish rambling.

C's snack recommendation of the week: chocolate-covered sunflower seeds. Yum! I'm also a fan of chocolate-covered gummi bears. Both of these sound questionable, I know, but I'm addicted.
