Ok so I'm finally on my holiday, I have made a daring escape from the clutches of horrible Basque weather and small towns where there is nothing to do but drink more than a healthy ammount of wine and have made it to the first step of my journey, Madrid!
I'm currently sat in an internet café I used to print some stuff off and shall recap my adventures thus far:
Day 1:
I got on the train, read Crunchamunch's first draft, watched spooks, wrote emails and generally managed to occupy myself for five hours. Found the hotel in Madrid, unpacked realised my hope of getting to El Rastro before it closed wasn't going to happen, oh well, doubtless that was a good thing for my wallet.
I found the english speaking cinema again all by myself and accidentally bought a 17:40 ticket rather than an 8 o'clock one...and just went with it. Turned out to be a good move. I went to see the avengers, which i totally thought I'd missed and it was AMAZING. I loved it so very very much.
Favourite moment was probably
Thor: He's still my brother..
Black Widow: He killed 80 people in 2 days,
Thor: ...He's adopted.
After I got out I walked through the town and through Retiro park, it was still warm and light out and it was a lovely evening. In the park was a big gazebo...full of people dancing tango, they do this every sunday and I happily joined in. I may just come live here! I went home very happy and got to the hotel just as the Spanish won the football and the whole town went nuts, the party went on well into the night and I got to see fireworks.
Day 2:
I slept in very lazily, and then made my way slowly across town to the station where I changed my ticket from seville-barcelona to the fast train for only 3 euros more, and then bought tickets for a day trip to Toledo.
Toledo is...sunburnt, I wouldn't have wanted to attack this place in the middle ages I tell you that. A bus from the station to the centre dropped me off at the TOP of the massive hill the town is built on and I gradually made my way down and round looking at all the monuments from the outside, and some from the inside. Unfortunately a lot of them were shut cause i'm an idiot and went on monday. Still I wasn't feeling too museumy so that's allright. it was very hot, and I wish I'd had a hat. I almost boughtone but the place was so touristy I thought i'd wait and get one from an actual clothes store in Madrid.
It was totally all worth it just for the view from one of the small squares of the river below and the others hills in the area, it's gorgeous with that very meditteranean vegetation (south of france, tuscanny, you know what I mean, all twisted trees, dry grasses, small bushes) a huge drop for the river below, ruins IN the river below and gorgeous skyline. Pictures when I get home. It was just...gorgeous. Really gorgeous.
Then i went back to madrid and got something to eat. mmmm Paella, and now I'm printing out CVS and killing time before I go bak to the hotel.
