Busy Sunday

Apr 25, 2009 17:20

I've always enjoyed swimming, running and cycling. On 19 April, I recklessly took on all three, one after another, without any prior training. I woke up at 6.30am that Sunday, wolfed down a mixed nut bar, and picked Grace up. We headed to Carpark 7 at Changi Point and waited for the boys n bikes.

How did I feel during the race? It was exhausting. The 750m swim felt like it was never going to end. You see the buoy just up ahead, and you think you'll be able to turn the corner in a few strokes. But NOOOooo, the buoy floats away from you. You see the shoreline 50 m away, and you think that's one lap. Easy. But NOOooo, the tides push you back further and further away.

My heart was pounding so hard as I ran across the sandy beach, I had to start walking. Plus, I knew I still had 2/3 of the race left, so i had to preserve energy. I took forever at the transition area, which was almost empty already. I fumbled with my laces and pushed my bike to the start point. My heart was still pounding hard and I took deep breathes to slow my heart rate.

Cycling was a nice change, except other cyclists kept overtaking. They'd shout, "ON YOUR RIGHT!" as they whizz by. I had no idea this was a common practice. The first time someone shouted at me, I thought he was being pesky. I took over Tamara and Soo Kien and rode alongside Spring. My legs felt like lead and I couldn't change the bike's gear on the upslope. It was so tiring! So after struggling with the gears, upslopes and turning into the wrong lane (finishing lane instead of 2nd lap lane), I was happy to get off the bike after 20km. Spring finished with me and we spurred on each other in the transition area.

Running. Last leg. I walked so much. I had SYT chatting with me all the way. I had a stitch from drinking water. I could feel my heart going thub thub, thub thub really fast and strong. I knew I could finish the race, it was just a matter of time.

I finished in 2:13:57, number 2, from the bottom in the 20-29 female category and number 744 out of the 748 who completed the race. DNF's came up to about 100+. I took too long walking in the running leg. I'm so not proud of my timing, but I completed! haha.
