I haven't updated in a couple weeks, but felt that I should probably do so. It wasn't cool being greeted with that depressing entry every time I logged on to lj. ;)
My summer's been going well since the last time we talked. Thanks to everybody who sent along birthday wishes! Frankly, it was quite overwhelming on facebook. I had a good birthday- saw "Spiderman 3" and went to dinner with my parents. I actually do feel older this year, especially the last two days. I don't know why, but I've really felt like I've grown a little bit recently. Comes with the territory, I guess.
My main activities recently have been activist-related, kind of. I walked (not ran, as I avoid intense physical activity that isn't dance) in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Saturday with a group from my church. It was overwhelming how many people there were in that race. We had a great time, despite getting up at 5 a.m., and went out for lunch afterwards before I had to get back and crash. :) I enjoyed it and would totally do it again. The energy in that large group was really cool.
While there, my mentor Melanie told me that she was going to the World Hunger Conference at American University on Friday. (It's actually the whole weekend, I think, but the ELCA is doing stuff on Friday.) Florence and I were both interested, and she said she would look into whether we could get in. It appears that we don't have to pay anything for the events we would plan to attend, and meals are included. We will be going on Friday! I have no idea what is actually scheduled to take place that day, but I'm sure I will get a lot out of it. I'm not working this summer, so I'm doing little things like this- volunteering in races, attending conferences- to keep myself busy. And I think it's really good for me. I'll post over the weekend with an update on how the conference went.
In other ELCA-related volunteering news, Florence and I may not be able to work at the next National Lutheran Youth Gathering in 2009. We were expecting to be free because, well, we would have graduated. But the MAT program starts in early July, and the Gathering is one of the first weeks in July, and they may conflict. This is sad because working at the San Antonio Gathering last summer was such a formative experience for me, as was going as a participant in the Atlanta Gathering 2003. It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience that I miraculously got to do twice. I guess the third time will have to wait until 2012.
Weather's beautiful today, if a little windy. I guess the rain we got the last couple days helped bring the temperature down a bit.
I've been doing a few more things- writing, reading magazines and the 6th "Harry Potter" book, watching a lot of "Ellen"- but nothing else that I can go into in a lot of detail at the moment. I saw "Pirates 3" over the weekend and liked it a lot, and a bunch of us are going to see it again tomorrow. It's a great opportunity to get together with some friends I haven't seen very much (and two I haven't seen in two years!).
Be back soon. Wish me luck at the conference! :)
