Today involved waking up early, a metro delay at my station, a sardine-esque ride to work on said metro, a student matinee that meant I didn't get into the office until 2PM, 1 hour to do actual work, a staff meeting, and a professional development workshop to sit in on that let out the teachers at 7PM and ME out at 7:30PM, and finally, an hour-long metro commute home.
I AM LE TIRED. TO SAY THE LEAST.
It's not to say that it was a terrible day. The matinee cracked me up- student audiences are, shall we say, EXPRESSIVE. One scene in our production takes place in the army barracks and happens to feature a number of shirtless men (including the fit male lead) and some frisky towel snapping.
THE AUDIENCE EXPLODED.
HOOTS.
HOLLERS.
CAT CALLS.
ASSORTED SHRIEKS AND WHOOPINGS.
The crew backstage TIMED IT at over seventeen seconds of raucous noise before the actors could even ATTEMPT to, you know, SPEAK A LINE and move the show along. While there was another impressive whoop at a kiss between Helena and Bertram (seriously, it was like Saved by the Bell in there) and the venerable old Shakespearean actor who plays the King came SO CLOSE to corpsing onstage at ANOTHER whoop for an implied somethingsomething between him and the widowed Countess at the very end, nothing quite matched that shirtless scene for sheer SCOPE.
I feel very conflicted with student audiences- on the one hand, I get a kick out of their reactions and the RAPTUROUS cheering they give at the end, I do also get annoyed by their general theatre etiquette (or lack thereof). Some days are better than others, but I don't like to see Venerable Old Shakespearean Actors get nearly drowned out by murmuring teenagers and rustling programs and shifting around.
Ah well.
For now, I am HOME, and while I will do my best not to turn into a Bitter Kitten as I see half my flist start to post their "OMG I AM AT
wincon!!!" entries, I am mostly too tired to care tonight! I have friends coming in this weekend who will prove great distractions and there was a new post at Hyperbole and a Half, so I am content for the time being.
