Seven Things

  1. For the first time yesterday, I listened to Lucinda Williams' ode to my Louisiana and more specifically, or at least nominally, my hometown. It is DECIDEDLY ODD to hear lyrics like "He was born in Nacogdoches/ That's in East Texas/ Not far from the border/ But he liked to tell everybody/ He was from Lake Charles" and think to yourself... 'BUT WHY? Nacogdoches is HOURS AWAY from Lake Charles, and Lake Charles is NOT REALLY THAT SNAZZY.' Ah well. I imagine this is like what residents of Baltimore feel like when they hear 'The Streets of Baltimore.' Because, trust me- 'the prettiest place on earth' is NOT Baltimore at night.

  2. I HAD THE DREAM LAST NIGHT. The terrible one where suddenly, you realize you have a midterm due the next day and you have done NO RESEARCH and yet you are supposed to hand in two 15 page essays and you are DOOMED. I actually managed to logic my way out of it, eventually, after much weeping and wailing and gnashing of teeth- I realized that we hadn't yet made it to October, or even the second class meeting, so there was no WAY our midterm could be due! Still let me feeling drained when I woke up, however, especially when I realized that I was still supposed to do plenty of work before tomorrow.

  3. Instead of doing that work, however, I will be having hamburgers with Sister and then celebrating the First Annual Labor Day Supernatural Stew Spectacular today with the Js, wherein we eat stew and watch the last of the good episodes of S4 of Supernatural. Let it NE'ER BE SAID that I don't know how to celebrate major American civil holidays!

  4. To further explicate my remark of yesterday that Socrates was, in fact, a dick, I feel compelled to add that Socrates was also a know-it-all, the latter having a direct effect upon the former. I dare say that a formula exists to show the direct relationship between these qualities. But basically, Socrates- what a wanker.

  5. I have to come up with a Real and Rational Response to my readings for class tomorrow, and I wish to HIGH HEAVEN that I could just copy and paste the above. I somehow feel, however, that this wouldn't do.

  6. I spent yesterday with balefully, ONCE AGAIN enjoying episodes of 'The Dean Forester Show,' this including the SHOCKING TWIST wherein DEAN PULLS A FELICITY AND CUTS HIS HAIR. I rather imagine the scene being a combination of the 'Felicity' opening credits and the 'Needle in the Hay' sequence from The Royal Tenenbaums. Very dramatic stuff.

  7. I have a pile of DVDs to watch, all of which I have seen many times before, but all of which I GREATLY DESIRE to watch again. These include Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in Charade and the first three discs of 'Jeeves and Wooster' (VERY IMPORTANT RESEARCH, I SWEAR, FOR CERTAIN PROJECTS WHICH WERE TO HAVE BEEN FINISHED WEEKS AGO BUT WHICH WILL TOTALLY, TOTALLY STILL BE HAPPENING, SOON AS I HAVE BUT WORLD ENOUGH AND TIME). Surely, if I approach my Theory professor tomorrow and EXPLAIN that it came down to a choice between Plato, Socrates, and impenetrable books about mimesis on the one hand, and Cary Grant, Stephen Fry, and Hugh Laurie on the other, THE COURSE WAS CLEAR. Who could argue?

jaredschmoo padaleckiface, film, whose idea was grad school anyway?, academia, tv, nobody wears pants like cary grant, my sister is better than yours, stephen fry is my bf4eva, louisiana, friends
