i have a journey, sir, shortly to go

Having just spent the morning watching a production of King Lear.... I think I can safely say that it's not a particularly CHEERY way to spend a morning. I watched a video of a production that was at the Folger a few seasons back that I'd missed at the time (and will soon be writing an essay on it for Prof Big Cheese), which is a very distancing way to watch live theatre. BY GOD is it awesome that we have this archive of DC theatre, but as far as recreating the atmosphere and being able to make the emotional connections? Not so much.

So now I'm kind of sad (THANKS, SHAKESPEARE) and kind of thinky (thanks, Shakespeare!) and wondering what sort of things I'll be writing about this weekend. I've also got to read 150 pages of Harley Granville-Barker's Preface to Hamlet, ALSO for Prof Big Cheese (WAY TO RUIN MY WEEKEND, QUESO HEAD), which, incidentally? Is not so much a preface as a BOOK, as the page count could probably inform you...

I've also got the Tavener concert tonight which I'm still excited about. :) I will probably have to skip out on the Theatre Departments shenanigans downtown involving booze and dancing, however. There've been some amazing emails going back and forth, trying to plan this outing, where we share such absurdities as:

I am happy to announce that I will be attending tomorrow night's conference, where I will be presenting an experiential exploration of Caillois's notion of ilinx, i. e. self-induced vertigo as play. The title of my workshop is "'The Voluptuous Panic': Destroying Stability of Perception with my Drink and my Two-Step." Methodologies employed will include suspension of social constrictions, nose-painting, rhythmic locomotion, and--if things get out of hand--spinning. Refreshments are compulsory. I am eager to share my work with colleagues and I look forward to your input.

I kind of love my department. :)

Ok, it looks like rain, so I should skedaddle and save my poor, blue head from the damp. Harley beckons me, I cannot say no.

tavener ain't so bad himself, shakespeare, choirgeek, king lear, theatre, kickass-ity, scenes from the grad office, friends
