It was Christmas.

Time for Santa Claus and Christmas Trees. Time for egg nogs and Christmas cookies. It is pretty much established that this is my favorite time of the year. Of course, my wife knows this.

Why Christmas?

Well, it’s because I get to do one thing that kinda pisses off my wife.

What’s that, you ask?

Gift giving.

Why on earth would that piss off my gorgeous wife?

Let’s track back a bit, shall we?

Well, ever since I’ve entered the show business, I’ve made it a point to always give simple gifts of gratitude. Whether it’s to the directors, producers, the whole staff, heck even Johnny-san, I’ve pretty much given everyone I’ve worked with little tokens of appreciation. Not that I’m such a suck-up. I really just enjoy giving out to people. I am not particular towards whom I give gifts to. My family, my friends and even some of my chosen charities have received things from me.

I’m not a show-off. I don’t give out all expensive things just to please them. But sometimes I do like to splurge on gifts, especially if it’s for a special someone.

Unfortunately for me, that special someone is not fond of receiving lavish gifts.

Contrary to all of my past girlfriends, Mao, my girlfriend at that time and my breathtaking wife now, hates it when I overindulge in giving gifts for her. She especially loathes it when I present her jewelry. I remember the tongue-lashing I received when I first showered her with sparkly things from Tiffany’s.

“A gift should mean something, Jun.” She told me after taking a peek at the jewelry set I just gave her for our first monthsary.

“I appreciate the thought and I do think that these are gorgeous but I’m not one for jewelry. I know you have excellent taste and I’m not saying it isn’t a beautiful and kind gift, but where’s the forethought? I want something that tells me you love me and only me. Anyone can buy jewelry.” She caressed my dumbfounded face and then closed the distance between us with her luscious lips. “I will wear these for a special occasion, Matsumoto. Thank you.”

I decided to let the matter rest. It wasn’t worth fighting over. I’m just happy she accepted the gift and did not force me to return it to the store. I figured jewelry for Mao is crossed off my Christmas list.

From that point in our relationship, I’ve decided to level-up my game. I promised myself I would be the best gift-giver in my beloved’s eyes. I made a decision to always put a more personal touch in my gifts for her and also to not give her jewelry.

However, I knew I was bound to break that promise, specifically the one which involved jewelry. It happened on Christmas 2015.

We were lucky enough to get a three-day break which started the day before the holiday. The two of us decided to book a flight to Vienna and celebrate our Christmas together in that beautiful place.

I woke up early that Christmas morning despite feeling sore and sleepy from last night’s activities. I made breakfast which consisted of strawberry pancakes with bacon and sausages and a cup of black coffee. Arranging them up to my standards on a tray complete with a simple clear vase containing a single red rose I managed to buy earlier, I brought breakfast for Mao in bed.

My darling angel was cooped up under the sheets with only her long, wavy locks peeking out. I laid the tray carefully on one side of the bed and decided to wake my own sleeping beauty. I carefully lifted the sheets to expose her beautiful face and caressed it.

“Morning, sleepy head.” I told her softly upon placing light kisses on her lips.

She stirred in her sleep and reached out for me. Holding me tight with her arms around my neck, she whispered “Merry Christmas, Matsumoto. And good morning to you too.” She ended her sentence with a lazy kiss which elevated into something more carnal.

Breaking off that intense make out session, I smiled and urged her to eat breakfast. “Merry Christmas, my dear.”

She was just about to take a bite of her heavily syruped pancake when a something shiny caught her eyes.

“Jun. Is that-” Her hazel eyes were as big as saucers as she pointed towards the rose.

I chuckled lightly and grabbed the said rose. Releasing the diamond ring I managed to tie on it earlier, I held it out for her while I’m on my knees.

“I wanted to give you your Christmas present. I remember you said on our first monthsary that jewelry isn’t a very good gift, that it’s not very meaningful and has little personal touch, but I hope you make an exception this time.”

I reached out and held her left hand. “Inoue Mao, I’ve known you for a long time. From our little encounter in front of the vending machine at the TBS building, I’ve been captivated by you. I have loved you from the very first smile you gave me. I will always love you and I never want to part from you ever. Will you marry me?”

“Yes! Yes! I will marry you, Jun!”

I felt my whole body come alive. With a dorky smile, I slipped ring on her. I stood up and kissed her enthusiastically, wanting to convey all the happiness she’d given me with a single word. She was still crying so I wiped off her tears with my thumbs.

“So I guess this kind of jewelry is okay?” I asked sporting a huge grin on my face.

“It’s better than okay. It’s perfect.” She beamed at me and we kissed again and again.

Looking around from where I sat on our sofa, I spotted the various gifts I gave my wife throughout the years displayed on our living room.

The teddy bear I knitted myself which I gave on our first anniversary as a couple.

The portrait I took of her when we were on our first trip as a couple.

The mini-figurine of a boston terrier I gave her as a souvenir the first time I went overseas ever since we became a couple.

The couple teacups we made on our honeymoon.

Of course my other gifts for her were either in our bedroom or kept safely by my beautiful wife.

Today is Christmas morning and I know I’m in huge trouble once Mao wakes up from her deep slumber.

Earlier I said that my gift-giving kinda pisses off my wife but seeing that I’ve changed my ways ever since that first monthsary, you ask again how is that possible?

Well, I kind of went back to my splurging days ever since my son arrived in this world. Being our first child, Akira-kun was pretty much spoiled by me. Almost all kinds of the latest toys and gadgets have been purchased by me for my little Aki-kun to play with. It’s not helping that his grandparents from both sides also shower the kid with countless toys. Mao warned me to stop buying toys for Aki’s room was starting to get crowded.

I might have disobeyed my wife’s order upon purchasing a big and almost life-sized stuffed Mickey Mouse for our son. She hasn’t seen it yet since I’ve only placed it beside our Christmas tree just now. How I managed to hide it from my wife was a mystery to both of us. I do hope she won’t get really mad at my gift for Aki-kun.

Speaking of Aki-kun, it looks like he’s finally awake. Not wanting to disturb my wife’s well-deserved sleep with his cries, I hurriedly took care of my son. After doing the ritual of replacing the baby’s diaper, I carried him towards the kitchen. I thought he’d be hungry so I fed him up with the warmed milk bottle.

Aki-kun was just finishing his bottle when my lovely spouse joined me on the sofa.

“Merry Christmas, honey.” She greeted with a little peck on my lips.

“Merry Christmas to you too, darling.” I whispered and kissed her again.

Little Akira must have hated being ignored as he started wiggling in my arms.

Mao chuckled and reached for our son. “Merry Christmas, baby.” After making Aki-kun comfortable in her arms, she handed me a green rectangular box which I seemed to not notice earlier.

“Here’s my Christmas gift.” She smiled.

“Ah so we’re exchanging gifts now? I’ll get mine.” I was just about to stand up when Mao grabbed my arms. “Open this one first.” She ordered, still with a smile on her face.

I gave in to her wishes and opened the said box. “Hmm… Baby’s boots?” I lifted the knitted purple baby boots. “Are you sure these are for me? Aki-kun will probably be the one who’ll benefit from this. Though I’m not sure the size is right. These are too small.”

Then something clicked. Mao must have noticed this for she chuckled.

“Are you saying what I think you’re saying?” I couldn’t contain my happiness.

Mao laughed louder. “Look inside the box, Jun. You’ll find your answer.”

I dove inside the box and threw the wrappings carelessly. For several moments, Jun did not look up from the box. He just stared at it. Breaking his trance, he searched Mao’s eyes. “Mao. Is this…”

“Yes.”

“When did you-”

“Three days ago. I took five different kits and all of them showed the same thing. I’ve already booked an appointment for next Monday.” My wife informed me.

I was speechless. I wasn’t expecting another one so soon. How on earth could I get so lucky?

I threw my arms around her and then kissed her passionately.

“Are you alright? I know we planned to have the next one after Aki-kun turns three but I really don’t know what happened. We were being careful.” Mao started to rant.

I silenced her with another kiss. “Of course I’m more than okay, Mao! I’m going to be a father again!”

At this, Aki-kun squirmed and let out a babbling noise. We laughed at our son’s attempt to express himself.

Mao kissed his little head while I held his little hand. “Yes, Aki-kun. You’re going to be a big brother now.” I whispered to him.

Mao beamed at us and I couldn’t help but kiss her again intensely.

Afterwards, we just looked into each other’s eyes and smiled at each other.

I suddenly broke into a heartily laugh.

“What’s funny?” My wife asked.

“I just realized you really did outdo me with this Christmas gift. I won’t be able to top this off. Sorry, hone.”

“Stop your nonsense. I will be thankful for any present you give me, whatever that may be.” Mao smiled at me.

“So can I give my gift now?”

“Yup. Just make sure it’s appropriate for this baby’s eyes. If not then just let me put back Aki in his crib so we can examine it more thoroughly in our bedroom.”

“You little minx!” I love it when my wife gets naughty. Even with Aki in her arms, I couldn’t help but be turned on. Therefore I reached for my son, who is fortunately sleeping again, and told Mao to wait on the sofa. I went to place Aki-kun back in his crib and then went to fetch my gift for Mao.

“Here you go.” I gave her my Christmas present.

“You’ve been scrapbooking?” My wife seemed surprised at this.

“Yeah. I mean we have lots and lots of photos taken throughout our years together so might as well get them organized into these.” I explained while Mao looks through each page.

The photos were arranged according to the place they were taken, per city, country and continent. The two of us are very much into photography so I had plenty to work with for my gift. It’s not surprising for me to produce three thick scrapbooks full of hand-picked photos.

“These are really amazing! I love it! Thanks, hone.” Mao sealed her thanks with a sweet kiss.

“You’re welcome. If you want, you can also start one of your own. I still have a couple of blank books you can use for scrapbooking.”
“That’s a great idea! I can make one for Aki-kun and this little one in my tummy.”

I caressed her still flat stomach and slowly looked into my wife’s eyes.

“Merry Christmas, Mao.”

“Merry Christmas, Jun.”
