PART THREE
Today was Tuesday. Today was also his day-off. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case for his wife.
Mao was pacing back and forth the kitchen while Jun was drinking his usual black coffee for breakfast. “The emergency numbers are listed on that pink note attached on the fridge. The bottles of breast milk are inside it. I think there are about five. Don’t forget to warm them up first before giving it to our baby. He likes it warm-” Before she got to finish her rant, I meant her reminders, Jun silenced her with a peck on the lips.
“Don’t worry. I got this, oka-san.” Jun teased his agitated wife.
“Okay. But don’t hesitate to call me if anything comes up.” She ran her fingers on her husband’s head to fix his awry hair. “I’ll try my best to get home early.” Mao kissed him goodbye and then dashed off towards her still sleeping baby. She first gently caressed his tiny head before placing a kiss.
“Be good to Papa. Okay?” His mother whispered to Seiichi-kun.
Being a new mother, Mao found it hard to part with her baby boy. It had been more than three months since she went into labor. She loved every moment with her newly born child but she cannot anymore postpone the inevitable going back to work. She had a new CM shooting today which she just cannot refuse. Since it was part of her contract and also only needed half a day, Mao decided to take part. But that doesn’t mean, she won’t miss her little boy.
With a last longing look at Seiichi-kun, Mao returned to her husband. She bid him goodbye with another kiss and then left the house.
Jun finished his breakfast quickly and then took a shower, taking this opportunity while the baby was still fast asleep.
Luckily when he emerged from the bathroom, baby Seiichi was tranquil as ever on top of the cradle.
Jun smiled at this sight. “Guess it’s just you and me, little one.” He murmured before grabbing a book to read on the bed.

An hour had passed and Jun’s reading was disturbed by a familiar wailing. He immediately went towards the cradle, where he was greeted by an also familiar kind of smell.
With a scrunched nose, he lifted the baby and transferred him unto the changing area. The first-time father then dove in to assess the damage.
“Well, you are good at digesting your food, that’s for sure.” Jun then proceeded to the routine of changing Seiichi-kun’s diapers. He also took the initiative to change the boy’s onesie, opting for the blue one with the cute dinosaur design. This action however did not go about without the little boy’s kicking of feet. “With all this kicking, I think you’ll be a great football player, Seiichi-kun. But it’s all up to you. Whatever you want to do in life, I’ll support you all the way.” He said while trying to fasten all the tabs on the baby’s clothing.
“You’re probably hungry, are you? Want to drink your milk now?” He took the baby’s happy cooing as a sign so he brought up Seiichi-kun to his arms and led to the kitchen.
Using only his left hand, since the other one was supporting his child, he opened the fridge and grabbed one chilled milk bottle. He then placed it on the ever-reliable bottle warmer.
While waiting for the said bottle to warm, Jun busied himself with tickling the baby on his arms. He was rewarded with sounds which seemed like the beginnings of a laugh. Seiichi-kun still had not let out a full laugh and his father wanted to be present when this happens.
Before long, a click was heard which meant that the bottle was ready. Jun gently fed his baby with the warm milk bottle. Little Seiichi was happy to oblige and sounds of his hearty sucking was heard by his father.
After the feeding, Jun decided to take his baby out for a walk. The weather looked great so he deemed it perfect to commence the activity. Instead of the stroller, Jun opted to place Seiichi unto the front baby carrier.
Jun decided to walk around the park. Not wanting to attract unnecessary attention to the two of them, he sported a simple hoodie and made the baby wear a beanie. Their walk was refreshing. A couple of people did try to interact with his cute baby but overall it was pleasant experience. That is, until the rain started pouring heavily.
Not wanting to drench the baby, Jun held him close and ran as fast as he could back home. However, since the rain was pouring really strong, it was inevitable for the father and son to arrive home both completely drenched.
Jun was terrified. He feared his boy might catch a cold or worse, a flu of some kind. He hurriedly went for the bathroom and filled the white baby tub with lukewarm water.
Jun couldn’t help the nagging feeling he was feeling. He felt as if he had compromised Seiichi’s health. On top of that, he feared he’d accidently drown the baby boy. Jun had only watched while his wife bathed him, possibly passed around things to her too but that’s not counted. He had never handled the baby on top of the tub. But time was of the essence so Jun took a deep breath and started stripping the baby’s clothing.
Probably sensing his father’s fear and also feeling cold, Seiichi-kun started crying. “Shh. It’s okay. Papa’s got you.” Jun tried to shush and comfort him.
After doffing all of the baby’s clothes, Jun slowly lowered the baby into the tub. Much to his dismay, the baby also started kicking his feet and flailing his arms, splashing water around.
“There. There.” Jun chastised the baby boy while gently pouring water on his body.
Suddenly, Seiichi was no longer crying. Instead what can be heard was a strange kind of gurgle, which Jun then realized was actually a laugh. Finally. He finally heard Seiichi-kun laugh. Oh your mother’s going to be pissed missing this milestone.
“You like the water, baby? We should probably head to the pool soon, right? I hope your mommy and I get our schedules aligned so that we can have our first family outing.”
Jun poured more water on the baby’s tummy before moving to the actual washing part. He gently washes his belly and back first before going to the more distal parts such as his arms and legs. The baby’s head was washed last before commencing the rinsing ritual.
When he’s finished doing that, Jun lifted the baby and covered him in a towel before heading to the changing area. He donned on a new diaper and a clean set of baby pajamas.
Jun held his boy closely and tried to rock him into sleep. He seemed to be successful for the baby yawned and snuggled against him with eyes closed.
After his father gently deposited him back to his cradle, little Seiichi had soon drifted to sleep.
Deeming it safe for the baby to be left alone, Jun decided to take a quick shower and then prepare for today’s lunch and dinner.

Mao arrived home before the sun set. She found her husband in the kitchen, stirring up the boiling pasta noodles.
“Tadaima!” She greeted Jun with a kiss.
“Okaeri.” He muttered before deepening the kiss.
“What are you cooking?”
“Pasta.”
“Again?”
“You know it’s my specialty.”
“Well then I’ll leave it up to you, mister. Right now I need to see my baby.” With that, Mao left him and dashed towards the bedroom.
To her delight, little Seiichi had just awakened from his deep slumber.
“Well, hello there chibi-ouji!” Mao reached over the cradle to lift her baby boy. “Did you miss Mama?” She showered the baby with kisses while exiting the room.
“Did you behave well, Seiichi-kun?” She cooed to the baby.
“He mostly slept throughout the day. Although I do have something to confess.” Jun said as he turned off the stove and transferred the dish into the serving platter.
“We took a walk around the park this morning because the weather looked great. However the weather took a turn for the worst and before we knew it, we were already drenched with rain water.” Jun was actually waiting for Mao to turn into a Mama-bear and scold him to death but he was greeted with a simple, “Okay.”
“I did give her a bath immediately upon reaching home.”
“Well, that’s good.” Mao replied nonchalantly while still playing with her baby.
“You’re not mad?” Jun was surprised at how calm his wife was taking in all the information.
“Do you want me to?”
“No.”
“Then I’m not.” She walked towards him and gave him an assuring pat in the back. “I’m not mad at you. It’s not your fault you got caught up in the rain. How I wished you managed to bring an umbrella but that’s okay. I’m glad you shared this little experience with Seiichi.” She gave her husband a peck on the lips.
"Now enough of that and let’s get eating. I’m hungry!” Mao deposited Seiichi back to his cradle before returning to the kitchen.
Jun was happy at how his day-off turned out to be.
