On the 12th Year of Boar's Head...

I found the ticket the other day, while trying to organize the study. It was January 2000 when I first saw the Boar's Head Festival at Trinity United Methodist Church. Has it been 12 years? I've spent the past nine of them performing in the festival, first as a Woodsman and then as a Beefeater. This year's festival is next weekend, Jan. 13-15. As far as I know, there are still tickets available, which is a rarity. Usually, they sell out.

This year, L. won't be playing flute, because we're still expecting the arrival of our second child. Hopefully, he doesn't arrive on Boar's Head weekend, because I'm supposed to be a Beefeater again.

I've written about the festival extensively here over the years, but what continues to impress me is the community effort that it takes to put on a show of this magnitude. It's been going on for nearly three decades now. I was talking to the guy who wrangles the live animals for the show at one of the rehearsals and he looked up at the stage to see the youth choir singing "Let All Mortal Flesh" and he said he could remember when all of them were babies. His sons all grew up in the show. He has been doing the animals for 12 years now. It's really something to be a part of, to know that you are doing your small bit to give this gift to the community.

Here's a video, featuring a radio interview with Becky Isaacson, Trinity's organist and the musical heartbeat behind Boar's Head. It is illustrated with a montage of photos of the festival and of Trinity.
