Tonight, I'm sure, many of my fellow Americans had a plethora of theaters from which to choose the following films for their viewing pleasure:
Reno 911: Miami
The Number 23
The Messengers
Norbit (*shudder*)
Certain of these films, I'm certain, will make you lose brain cells just by being within a few feet of where they're playing.
Only one theather of the half dozen or so we regularly frequent in the Akron-Canton area was showing Amazing Grace tonight. On one screen. Probably explains why we showed up for the prime time showing and got to the ticket counter just as it sold out. Still, with nothing but a revoltingly stinky house waiting at home for us (we're still trying valiantly to get the carpet dried out, but it's been damp for three days now), we decided "What the heck?" and bought tickets for the 10:00 and went to dinner while we waited.
It was worth the wait.
Film is art. It should educate. It should move. It should inspire. Amazing Grace a film that proves that movies can do all of these things and still be a thing of beauty, and still be clean.
The song itself is... our song. The anthem of Christianity. It is a tradition at my own church to sing Amazing Grace after everyone on the congregation has taken the communion. We sing it a capella, and after our pastor starts us off, he ceases to "lead" the song and kind of backs out and blends in with the rest of us. I swear, I stand still and I can hear the believers from every generation, reaching back before the song was even written singing it right along with us, because this song was written in the hearts of the redeemed long before it echoed on sound waves.
Yet I would encourage my non-Christian friends not to be wary of the film. It's primarily a historical fiction piece. The elements of the Christian faith are there, certainly. You cannot separate them from this part of history, but the film portrays my faith as I believe my faith and the way I try to hold it out before the world. Not with a battering ram but with open arms. Come. Come and see this beautiful thing. There is a reason for it all. There was a cause, there were amends. Don't you want this peace and joy and purpose that pour out from my soul? They're not just for me. You can have them too.
At any rate, when I'm in this kind of mood, I could go on forever, but... everyone should go see Amazing Grace if they can. Christian or no Christian, I promise you, you'll love it.
(If none of that seems incentive enough, I will also throw out there the fact that Ioan Gruffudd sings in the movie) ;-)
Or you could go see Norbit and become stupider.
