A little of this and that

I can honestly say that Wednesday and Thursday of last week were among the two most miserable days that I can possibly remember. They're over. A good thing.

Wednesday I woke up itchy. Sure enough my legs are covered in a welty, blotchy rash. Apparently I'm allergic to Macrobid. I showered, dressed and rushed into work to get my computer so that I could work from home. Meanwhile, I'm not taking the antibiotics and what I think is the UTI, ratchets up a notch. The burning pain has increased as had the sense of urgency. At least I had an appointment with the urologist on Friday.

Then came Thursday. Thursday made me miss Wednesday because now I am going to the bathroom every 5 minutes. I am not exaggerating. The pain is getting intense. Urinating that frequently means there isn't a lot there. I just want to curl up into a ball and cry in misery.

Friday proved to be be interesting. I had my appt with the urologist first thing. What she told me was that I no longer had a UTI. All the pain and urgency I was feeling was post-UTI, my bladder's response to being under attack for so long. She gave me a prescription for pills that make me pee like King George (blue) and samples for something that will also calm down my bladder. Neither brought instant relief, but she encouraged me to drink a lot because she said that the fuller my bladder was the easier the spasms would be. By night I was actually able to leave my apartment.

Which was good because today was chock full of errands. Farmer's Market, Supermarkets, Hallmark, the family day at the office (for my 1 hour volunteer shift) and dinner at Taj India near my house. It's the first time I've gotten take out since I had surgery. I'll freeze most of the leftovers. It was great. I can't make this a habit, but it worked for tonight. I think the construction crew left for the night and left their radio blaring. It's going to be a long night. And tomorrow is an all-work day. I have two major projects due on Monday and neither is complete. Mostly because I had a difficult time concentrating this week. I was too damn uncomfortable.

I was supposed to be stitching tonight. I have a baby bib that must be finished this week. But I haven't been in the mood. I'd rather be reading.

Book #90 Into the Fire by Suzanne Brockmann. Despite a supporting cast that is growing larger than many multinational companies, Brockmann gets better with each book. Even her subplots are multi-layered, there are no throwaway scenes. Everything returns full circle, even if it doesn't happen in the space of a single book. This story brings us back to Vinh Murphy, whom we hadn't seen since his wife was murdered. He's the prime suspect in the murder of the man who ordered the hit on Vinh's wife. Both Tom Paoletti's Troubleshooters and Seal Team Sixteen make appearances. The Decker/Ghaffari/Malkov triangle takes an interesting twist as does the Decker/Bailey/Nash triangle. Every character is important and happily ever afters aren't assured even if the couple was happily together in the last book. Brockmann takes chances and runs with them. Hannah Whitfield, Vinh's best friend, is a former cop who was injured in an accident and though the treatment saved her life, she lost her hearing, so there was a lot of sign language and lip reading. Hannah behaved like someone who couldn't hear but who once had. Brockmann's own son is hard of hearing so she knows this first hand. There are too many plots in this book to focus on one, just to say that this series is very clever and the characters very likable, and both ensure Brockmann a place on top for a long time to come. 4 stars.

Book #91, Nobody's Princess by Esther Friesner is my next book club book for my science fiction/fantasy book club. This is an interesting take on Helen of Troy and what she was like as a teenager. As Friesner reminds us in her Afterword, there isn't a lot written about Helen and certainly not about her childhood. All her life, until she hit the ugly duckling stage as a teenager, people told her how beautiful she was but that wasn't something she had control over. She was going to be Queen of Sparta. What if she wanted more. What if she wanted to learn fighting and tactics? And what if her mother agreed with her? Helen was a strong character in this book but it wasn't deep enough for me. Entertaining, yes, but I wanted more. Though there is a sequel, it takes place later and I don't know if I care that much. At least not right now. 3 stars.
