Few things disgust me as much as women who cheerfully throw other women under the bus in order to advance themselves. I am a firm believer that sisterhood is global and do my best not to fall prey to that bull shit social conditioning that tries to tell me that I should see all other women as competition and therefore need to tear them down in order to edify my own sense of self.
Recently a woman who works as an escort in Providence, RI called the police because on of her customers pulled a knife on her and tried to rob her though I suspect that if she hadn't fought back and escaped, he would have done worse. The woman also happens to be an attorney and she and the Asst. Attorney General asked the Providence Journal to keep her identity secret. Instead,
the newspaper printed not only her name but an entire mini-bio about the victim and her background, education and work history. The reporter who wrote the story is a woman which makes the insult that much worse.
What this incident says is that if you are a woman and you engage in sex work, you will not be considered to be fully human and you therefore have no right to expect that people will respect your dignity or even your safety. In fact, if you are the victim of a crime, we will consider it to be punishment for daring to step outside the boundaries of what we as a society deem acceptable for female behavior. Anyone who believes we're living in the post-patriarchy seriously needs to open their eyes. All the same rules still apply.
