(because I am dorky and excited to be done with draft #2)
Total page length: 49
Total essay length: 34 pages
Bibliography length: 4.5 pages
Figures: 15 images with captions on 6 pages
A page each for the title page, abstract paragraph, and table of contents.
Number of footnotes: 85 (I kid you not.)
Longest footnote: #44 on Hans Kauffman's mention of manuscript illuminations of Judith and David and the fact they are not reproduced in his text or in another that mentions Kauffman's findings.
Most random footnote: #70 explaining one writer's decision to shorten the Assyrian King's name to fit the rhyme scheme of her poem better (Nabochoudonsor = Nabuc).
Number of mentions of Donatello (full document): 115 times
Number of mentions of Judith & Holofernes: 33 times
Number of mentions of Judith: 323 times
Number of mentions of widow: 119 times
Favorite things I found out: theologians St. Jerome and Augustine on Judith as Ecclesia and the ideal Roman Republic whose imagery is later re-used by Dante and Petrarch respectively.
New fave words: "vedovetta" meaning little widow which is used by two different authors and "il corbaccio" meaning evil crow or wicked raven which Bocaccio probably used as a descriptor of the story's lusty widow (ie widows wear black which is the color of crows or ravens hence the title of the story).
Is the paper perfect yet? Heck no but I feel a little better about its logic and fluidity. Here's to hoping I hear good things from my adviser when she gives it back. Now for that celebratory peche lambic in the freezer...
