To Kill A Mockingbird

I accomplished one of the goals I set for myself this summer.  I have always wanted to read "To Kill a Mockingbird".  The sad part is the book has been sitting on my bookshelf for years and I never bothered to pull it out.  Both of my oldest kids had to read it in seventh grade, you would think that would tell you how long it has been here.

That is an awesome book. I also really love, The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The movie is out on DVD right now. I haven't watched it yet. LOL.

I'll second the vote for "The Road." The writer's style is very distinctive and I needed to get a few pages into it until I fell into the right rhythm. But it's awesome, and the movie entirely lives up to the promise of the book - which isn't something that happens very often.

I really liked The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

And I'm totally with you on the Kindle thing. I need to actually hold my books. :)

Thanks for the suggestion. I can't wait to give it a shot. The Kindle? It sounds awesome, it really does, but I love turning pages and the actual feel of a book. Glad it is not only me.

I agree with tru_faith_lost - The Road was amazing, I listened to it unabridged via audiobook and I'm not at all interested in seeing what they did to it in movie form - I already have a movie of it playing in my head that I don't want them to mess with. Really, anything from Cormac McCarthy is pretty amazing.

Congrats to you on getting the old-school reading groove again...I'm hoping I get it this summer, too. I'll be checking back in here for suggestions.

Two for The Road. (It sounds like a bad drinking game!) In any case, that goes on the top of my list. Thanks.

The movie was *excellent*, kjfri - I watched it via rental the other day and was so impressed I immediately bought a copy. Truly, you're cheating yourself if you don't give it a try.

I'm glad you think they did the book justice but I can't - I just can't do it - I loved No Country for Old Men and then I saw it and it didn't jive with the movie I had created, so it ruined it a little for me. So, I'm sticking to my guns on this one - The Road will stay in my head as long as I can. But thanks for the encouragement!

Ah, a great book, for sure! And perfect for summertime, too. A favorite classic of mine is Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes. It's better read in autumn, but I can't recommend it highly enough if you haven't read it. It's short, too. Spooky, gorgeously-written fun. (And also with the brotherly angst, though the two MCs aren't biologically related.)
