I'm using a customised version of Opal.

My archive page is kind of messed up. I think what I need to do is set the width of the calactitem class in the CSS, but when I do that it messes up the sidebar calendar. It says here that as a perm user I should be able to define a new class for one or the other, so how do I do that?

I have googled and searched LJ high and low -- I could SWEAR I saw something somewhere once about adding a sidebar to the generator layout! Is this completely not possible? If it IS possible, could you please point me to the tutorial or let me know what the code is that I need to add to my theme layer?
