The faded colour of her room - yellow. The heart-shaped stone she picked from the sandy beach - yellow. The furry teddy bear she hugs to sleep, every single night - also yellow.

Yellow, was never her favourite colour. Sometimes, it looks too dull. Other times, it was just too bright. Yet always, every single time without fail, would that familiar face come to mind.

Kevin said his obsession for yellow started because of Winnie the Pooh. The cuddly bear that eats honey and sleep, or at least, that was what he remembered it to be. Somewhere along the way, she too, started developing a habit of choosing yellow. The yellow keychain with her five-lettered name “Ariel”, her yellow mattress with sunflower prints, that it was as if her world was monochromatic.

Knocks on her door brought her back to reality.

“Please, Ariel, eat something!” Ariel’s mother voiced out her desperate request, a series of hurried knocks as if to show her franticness.

“I’m fine. Just looking at yellow, feeling a little…” Ariel sighed with a faint smile. “Mellow.”

“Ariel!”

There wasn’t much left to say, to hear, to see. Even with closed eyes, yellow haunted her.

-

He was torn in between the two choices he had, knowing this was the hardest decision he had to make. Kevin had a dream, and he was only a nod away from it. Yet doing so would drag him away from the person who made this dream possible.

Things were simpler when he was much younger.

The yellow dress he saw on Ariel when he was ten immediately made him run towards her, curiously asking if he could try it on. She punched him and caused his shaky tooth to drop, but Kevin didn’t cry. He insisted that he wanted to try the dress on.

He couldn’t really remember what happened, and whether or not he finally did wear the dress. He only remembered that they became friends, good friends, close friends, best friends, and then it went to a level he couldn’t quite place a name for.

Eventually, he chose his dream. He told Ariel of his choice, hoping he would still have her support. But when she smiled with tears in her eyes, Kevin thought he might not actually want that support that was breaking his heart.

He never saw Ariel cry.

-

“Ariel.” Kevin knocked on her door in a quick rhythm, voice slightly nervous. He turned to Ariel’s mother behind him, seeing the woman with red swollen eyes, whispering words of prayer.

“Kevin…?” Ariel’s voice was hoarse, but she cleared her throat and asked again. “Is that you?”

“Can I come in?” Kevin bit his lower lip, hands pressed against the door while he sighed inaudibly. “Or can you come out?”

“I’m sorry, I’m rushing out some school work, so no. I’ll be pretty busy for a while.” Ariel laughed, trying to add happiness in her voice while Kevin and Ariel’s mother looked at each other in worry. Ariel’s mother nudged him to say something with pleading eyes, something to change her mind, while Kevin didn’t know what to do.

“Ariel…”

“Have fun in Korea.” Ariel said, and the tremble in her voice didn’t go unnoticed.

-

Ariel walked to school as usual, except that for today, and the future, it would only be just her. Sighing, with her black sunglasses worn to hide her red puffy eyes, Ariel turned the corner and collided into someone.

Unprepared for the impact, both of them fell to the floor, Ariel wincing slightly as she check the bruised that form on her palm. She dismissed the pair of yellow shoes the other person wore as coincidence to what she did as well.

“Ariel…” The name trailed off, and Ariel jerked at the realisation of who she collided into.

Quickly getting up and hastening her speed, she was caught by the man she tried so hard to avoid.

“Ariel!” Kevin grabbed hold of her shoulders, forcing her to look straight into his eyes. Ariel noticed that he too, hadn’t been sleeping well. “H-How have you been?”

“Ah, I got a sore eye from seeing the wrong things online.” Ariel joked, nervous laughter trying to hide her badly made up lie.

Kevin didn’t say anything to expose Ariel, and they silently made their way to school. Suddenly hugging Ariel from behind, Kevin clung onto her while breaking out into tears. “I’ll miss you so badly…”

“I’ll miss you too.” The voice was soft, and to put it plainly, lacked emotions of any sort. Kevin wasn’t used to Ariel being so cold, so distant. “Really.”

“Ariel…I hope you know nothing changed between us.” Kevin took in a deep breath, biting his lower lip nervously. He actually needn’t come to school anymore, mother requesting for a drop out a week ago. Last Friday was his last day of school, the day which he left the school teary-eyed, the only day he didn’t see Ariel in school. Backing away, as if afraid of saying goodbye, he suddenly rushed forward to kiss Ariel quickly on her cheeks and then ran in the opposite direction.

“You’re still the one I want to marry!”

-

Three years had passed, and Ariel wondered if that meant she should just move on. Carrying a three month old baby in her arms, she did her usual stroll in the park and almost, almost dropped the baby in her hands.

“K-Kev…?” Ariel blinked, involuntarily taking a step forward cautiously, in case this was an illusion.

Kevin stiffened at the sight of his childhood friend (or maybe something more) carrying a child. “Hi…”

“You’re…back.” Ariel took another step forward, frowning while reaching out a hand.

“And you’re…” Kevin shook his head. “Nothing. Great to see you again.”

Ariel ran forward into Kevin’s arms, unable to control the tears that so naturally came to her, slipping down her cheeks. The little infant struggled to get out, but that went unnoticed as Kevin tried to be as calm as possible, hands circling around the slim waist of Ariel’s.

“You smell like a superstar.” Ariel laughed, pulling away while pinching Kevin’s cheeks. “You lost so much weight.”

“I have a big fanbase too.” Kevin smiled, hand easily holding onto Ariel before realising maybe he shouldn’t do that. Moving upwards to hold her wrist instead, he gestured for them to move to the ice-cream store they usually frequented when they were young.

“Tell me all about it.” Ariel grinned widely, slightly relieved the man she knew never changed. “Oh, but why are you back?”

Kevin bit his lower lip.

”For someone I thought loved me the same.”

-

“I can’t believe you didn’t tell me you were married.” Kevin tried to say as casually as possible, laughing even.

Ariel stopped in her tracks, letting the melting ice-cream melt as she did. “W-What?”

“That kid in your arms? What’s his name?” Kevin’s smile falter as he saw Ariel’s weird glance. “Uh…?”

“I’m just working as a babysitter for money.” Ariel laughed uncontrollably, before it became so loud she couldn’t stop tears from falling down. As if showing her amusement, she smacked ice-cream into Kevin’s face. “My stomach hurts so badly!”

Kevin gave Ariel a sideway glance, internally relieved but not showing it. “Hey, this face costs millions.”

“You still have awful skin like before~!” Ariel teased.

The usual jokes went on, and Kevin was glad nothing was stopping him from what he meant to do.

-

Kevin was leaving in a week, he said on the third day of his arrival. “I just came home for a holiday that we were all given, to…tie some loose ends here.”

“Oh. All tied up?” Ariel smiled, and Kevin’s heart still fluttered at the sight.

“I don’t know yet.” Kevin sighed. “Join me for a walk?”

“Always.”

They slipped into their own comfortable pair of shoes, Kevin smiling at their couple-like shoes.

“Nonsense. They’re just both yellow.” Ariel rolled her eyes, laughing heartily. “Besides, this pair has been with me for years. If anything, it’s just you trying too hard.”

Kevin pouted, acting as if he was hurt by those words, before intertwining his fingers with Ariel’s shorter ones, grabbing her while breaking out into a run unexpectedly.

“What are you doing, Kevin Woo?!” Ariel screamed, trying hard to catch up with Kevin’s practiced pace, panting. “I haven’t ran since I graduated!”

“Then you should pick it up again?” Kevin winked, only stopping when they reached the usual park.

Ariel couldn’t reply wittily, or at least, not in her breathless state. Kevin continued teasing her for being so unhealthy and having a body of a grandmother’s, before Ariel kicked his legs in mock fury.

“Ouch, you’re always so violent.” Kevin whined, rubbing the sore spot on his leg with a cute pout.

“And you’re such a girl.” Ariel stuck out her tongue childishly, before finally signalling to Kevin that she was ready to start walking again.

“You know…” Kevin started as they walked side by side, enjoying the scenery they were so familiar with. “I actually wanted to tell you something since forever.”

“Hm?”

“You’re more attractive than the yellow dress I set my eyes on years ago.”

“I know.” Ariel shrugged with a confident look. “I’m just so awesome.”

“And I meant it when I said…” Kevin held his breath, before letting it all out. Spinning Ariel to face him, he leaned forward and pressed his lips against Ariel’s softer ones. The feeling was just so right, as if they had kissed before, with no unfamiliarity between them. Kevin supported Ariel’s head with his hands and deepened their kiss till it rendered them breathless. Ariel blinked as they pulled away, but the ring that was slipped into her fingers threw all coherent questions out of her brain.

“You’re the one I want to marry after all these years, Ariel.”
