MISUNDERSTANDINGS

The first time they were caught, it had been Nakai Masahiro, of all people, who had caught them. They had been sitting on a bench, isolated and completely alone, in a nearly abandoned park just a stone’s throw away from the Fuji TV studios. Kusanagi Tsuyoshi had needed to talk to Inagaki Goro about something, a common occurrence since they were each other’s confessors, so they had been sitting close together, their knees bumping, their faces so close that they could have shared the same breaths. Really, it was just whispered secrets, and nothing more.

But when Nakai-kun came, on his way to the studio for his own filming, he had stopped short and stared. And no amount of protesting from either could convince him that their intentions had been entirely innocent; that they really weren’t making out or anywhere close to kissing in an entirely public area.

Really, it was all a misunderstanding.

The next time they were caught, it was by Katori Shingo. Tsuyoshi had forgotten the time he had promised to meet up with Shingo when he had stumbled upon Goro in the same café. It was a more than welcomed coincidence, one that happened surprisingly often because of all the Members' penchants of ending up in the same places. This time, it was Goro who spoke out, inviting Tsuyoshi to sit down and have a chat. And because Tsuyoshi was supposed to meet up with Shingo at any time, they did not see any problems in sharing a drink, a normal fizzy drink with an extra curly straw for Tsuyoshi. As always, whenever they were together, they were completely in synch, so much so that when Goro bent over to sip at the drink, Tsuyoshi did too, their foreheads nearly bumping, their noses close to touching before they leaned back in laughter.

That was when Goro spied, out of the corner of his eye, Shingo, standing at the café window, his eyes wide as dinner saucers, his jaw hanging open. And when Goro hastily excused himself, no amount of indignant squeaking from Tsuyoshi could successfully wipe off the hilarious mix of amusement, because his best friend looked like a school girl with her first crush, betrayal, because why had Tsuyoshi chosen to hide such a juicy piece of gossip from him, and a slight bit of guilt, because if Shingo had known, he would not have interrupted their date. As Shingo began to interrogate him, all Tsuyoshi did was huff.

Really, it was all a misunderstanding.

Perhaps the most embarrassing one of all was their meeting at Goro’s favourite sushi restaurant. It had been during concert season when Goro discovered the sushi restaurant which had so delighted his taste buds that he had felt the insane urge to invite all the other Members to try it out. When the appointed time came, Tsuyoshi was the first to arrive, and there they stood waiting, thankful that each was not alone because it would have made the waiting so awkward and time-consuming. A few seconds later, Goro received a message. Kimura-kun couldn’t make it because he had decided to go home to his family. Soon after that, Tsuyoshi received a call. It was Shingo, apologizing because both Nakai-kun and he had decided at the very last minute to stay in their hotel rooms: Shingo because his muscles were aching and Nakai-kun suspiciously enough, had no particular reason. Goro shrugged. Although disappointed, he was extremely glad that he at least had Tsuyoshi with him, unlike the time when he had ended up eating at a staff cafeteria as the lone representative of SMAP.

It was only about half an hour into their dinner that the both of them realized the tittering that was going on around them. And when they did look up, it was amazing how quickly the girls in the corner table suddenly lifted up their menus, and in a stunningly swift action, the waitresses that had been serving them had suddenly busied her hands with an absolutely empty tray in the middle of the aisle. Later when Goro complained to Kimura-kun about his unexpected no-show, all Kimura-kun did was raise an eyebrow and remark, ‘You didn’t seem to miss us all that much considering Tsuyoshi was with you. The latest gossip said that you guys looked like you were having loads of fun.’ The implications were not lost on Goro, but no matter how much he protested, all Kimura-kun did was to wave him off with a wicked smirk.

Really, it was all a misunderstanding.

But it did not explain the twinges that Tsuyoshi occasionally felt when Goro turned to Kimura-kun, and not him, for comfort and support. It did not explain the irrational need to punch the nearest table, an urge that had disappeared with the hormonal instability of adolescence, when Goro breathed into Kimura-kun's ear, whispering a comment that had Kimura-kun chuckling under his breath, when Goro unconsciously rested a hand on Kimura-kun’s thigh as the older man leaned into him, his fingers drawing circles on the other’s skin, a gesture of intimacy so taken for granted between the two that made them look like they were in a world of their own.

And it did not explain the constant urge of running his fingers through his hair, an urge that Goro would unexpectedly develop when Shingo glomped Tsuyoshi, his strong arms enveloping the slighter man in a giant bear hug. It did not explain the way his heart seemed to twitch when Tsuyoshi looked to Shingo, not to Goro, whenever he was lost and confused, when Tsuyoshi unconsciously echoed or finished Shingo’s sentences, a habit they had developed as childhood friends, a habit that made it seem like they were made for each other, two of a kind.

And it most certainly did not explain the turn that one of their confession sessions had taken, when whispered secrets were hushed because tongues had been a little too preoccupied with more strenuous actions than talking, when lips were a little too busy to form the shapes that were needed for actual conversation, when the brain was fuzzy and the skin tingled.

So much for a misunderstanding.

Neither were very good at keeping secrets, especially not from their respective ‘more-than-friends-but-less-than-boyfriends’ Members, and Tsuyoshi became even more loose-tongued whenever he was spending time with his drinking partner. Although they were terrified, and neither had any idea why, they eventually decided to get it over with. It was in the dressing room, just minutes before a SMAPxSMAP shooting, that they finally dropped the bomb.

‘We’re together.’

The Members glanced up at them. There was only one thing written in those looks, ‘This was new, how?’

Really, sometimes a misunderstanding was just a reading between the lines that the people involved had drawn, but refused to see. And if the reading was done by people that they were close to, well, a misunderstanding was so much more than fabricated lies and gossip; it became a hidden truth that had been deliberately buried by the people involved, an unexpected step that could lead towards a newer and fuller understanding of each other.

Four times they were caught: three times by people they were close to and one by each other. Finally, they had stopped protesting.

Because really, it was no longer a misunderstanding.

Especially not between them.
