TO LET GO

It was a Western-style wedding, complete with white flowers, pews decorated with white ribbons and an aisle leading up to the spot where she stood with her future husband, an aspiring furniture maker and employee at Mastpole, Kitajima Shun. Even as the ceremony carried on around her, Oonuki Yuzuki couldn’t help but smile.

Even after all this time, her taste in men had not changed. What was wrong with her? Did she have a fetish for men who carved wood?

Although, Shun was really world’s apart from her first love. Being interior designers was the only similarity that they shared.

Her smile left her lips as Yuzuki’s thoughts drifted to her “brother”. He had dropped hints of his wedding ceremony to the people around her, courtesy of various gossip-loving friends, but he never directly approached her to invite her. Yuzuki should have felt hurt, insulted even, but the only feeling she had, at that time, was utter relief and a hint of happiness.

He had understood her so well.

She had not been ready then; it had been too soon. If he had invited her directly, there was no way that she would have been able to reject him. She would have gone, put on a brave face, regardless of her own festering feelings. She would have gone home that night and cried herself to sleep. She would have been emotionally wrung-out, exhausted and anguished.

It would have hurt her so badly, and she was not sure if the reopened wound would have fully healed.

Because no matter what had happened between them, no matter their choices, no matter what decision she had made with determination, she had loved him.

And she did not take her losses very easily, especially in something as important as love.

They had met again over time. She was his sister after all. It was easy enough to ignore the fact that he was married when he had not really changed much; still passionate about interior design, awkward with new people he met and treating her with a gentle kindness that had been present even when he had been distant towards her in their early days. They never really broached the subject, and for some strange reason, Maemi-san was never around when she met him at their joint workshop and studio.

Then, she had met Kitajima Shun. Her heart had fluttered; all her senses had come alive. Before long, she realized that she had fallen in love all over again.

And this time, he had reciprocated her feelings; he had chosen her.

After one whole year of dating, even more years of being friends, they had decided to get married. Yuzuki could still remember her first love’s face when she finally said the word “wedding” in front of him. It had been to ask him to become the interior designer for their wedding.

It was funny really. Who in the world would ask an interior designer like Hazuki Rensuke to become a part of the wedding team? But Yuzuki had wanted it, his touch on a ceremony that she held so precious in her heart. He had been confounded by her request, advising her to get an interior designer that specialized in weddings, but she had insisted.

In the end, they did get a wedding planner, a real one. But he had made the pews that their family and friends now sat on.

Like the chair he had made for her, they all had the symbol of a crescent moon carved into the corner of their backs. To her, that was his way of saying that he approved; that he would support her in this new phase of her life.

Tears pricked at her eyes; though she obstinately held them back. It had meant so much to her; that tiny detail. It had shown her that he still considered her an important part of his life; that he had not forgotten their connection.

And it had given her the courage to send him a wedding invitation. Whether or not he would attend, she did not know. Even now, as the ceremony was drawing to its climax, he was still absent. But a tiny part of her believed that he would be there.

CREAK! The door opened, near silent, but it was enough to catch Yuzuki’s attention. She had been looking out for it after all. Hoping that her veil hid her momentary distraction, she tilted her head slightly, her eyes glancing over to the back of the hall.

Hazuki Rensuke looked back at her, his intense gaze unwavering, a small smile tugging at his lips. His mouth moved to form a voiceless message, words that undid her completely.

‘Omedetou, imouto-chan.’ [1]

And, Yuzuki nodded, the tears that clung stubbornly to her eyelashes finally releasing their hold.

They were tears of happiness. She was marrying a man whom she loved, who loved her in return, who had chosen her amongst all others.

They were tears of nostalgia. Her first love, her first romance, was well and truly over. She had chosen to let go; it was time she fully accepted her decision.

They were tears of loss. She had truly loved Hazuki-san; the man she had admired, the one who had shown her parts of herself she had never known; the one she had eventually fallen for. Until she had changed, until they had both changed, he had been her everything.

But, they were not tears of regret.

As Yuzuki fell headlong into the emotions that overwhelmed her senses, she knew for sure that she would never regret it, their time together, the dreams that they had shared.

She would never regret meeting him.

Because she had lost a lover, but in return, she had gained a brother.

Because just as she promised to be by his side, he too had promised to be by hers.

By letting him go, she had not truly lost him.

And she would never truly lose him.
