JESUS CHRIST. This is what I mean about my classmates, poeple-- this one seriously wants to be a YA librarian:

EXAMPLE 1:
Wow-- I never really considered that iPods could be used educationally, or knew that there are educational podcasts out there. (I guess I have a lot more to learn about new technology!) I think it's a great idea. Students will probably be more interested in something educational if it comes in a format or packaging that resembles or makes use of their favorite forms of entertainment. Hopefully they'll learn to keep the volume at a reasonable level too... sometimes I really worry about those teens whose music you can hear even while the earphones are in their ears!

EXAMPLE 2:
I totally agree-- the benefits of new internet media usually outweigh the downfalls, as long as its users are educated! The fact that sites like MySpace are becoming so ubiquitous is a little alarming, especially after reading Feed which was kind of frightening to me! But I think they can be safe and fun for youth as long as they know the risks that are out there and how to avoid/combat them.

... And for the record, this is a different person from the one who was talking about libraries educating kids by teaching PARENTS how to teach teens to avoid online predators.

Note: Feed, by MT Anderson, is this week's assigned reading-- it's sort of stream of consciousness, about a dystopian future where almost everyone has a chip implanted in their brain constantly feeding them information (most of it commercial) and music, and a boy who's got a feed meeting a girl who doesn't. It's an okay book, and interesting, but seriously, folks, I can think of better books to base your luddism on.

omg, school
