Chapter 8

"Ne, Okachan, I have to go." Ryosuke called, carrying his white shoulder bag with the hand. After hearing his mother's 'Ki o tsukete ne?', he turned to the front door of their house to open it. Just as he was about to exit, his ever insistent sister Ryoko stumped her foot to call his attention.

"Ryosuke..." She began.

"What again?" Ryosuke turned back scratching his head. "Don't tell me it's about Mirai."

"Yes, it's about her. And your continuous effort to break her heart." She painted a serious expression on her face.

"I told you I'm not breaking her heart, and she's not my girlfriend, so quit it okay?"

"That's why you should give an effort to make her become yours while you have the chance. Stop going out with other girls!"

Ryosuke shaked his head as if he was saying, "Whatever." and decided to exit their house.

"Ryosuke!" Her shout was clear enough to stop the guy and make him listen to her. "If you won't tell Mirai how you feel about her, someone might steal her heart away from you."

That was enough. The good-looking Yamada guy wasted no more time listening to his sister's reprimands and went his way to fetch Mariya. While walking to school though, he couldn't stop thinking about Mirai's face at the mall when she saw him together with Mariya. It was emotionless, but her eyes spoke a lot of pain and sadness. Could he really see behind her eyes? Or he was just too assuming just like his sister? She's not his girlfriend of course, but why did he feel like he had the responsibility of not letting her see him dating another girl. And of all the places, why do they have to go to that section of the mall and accidentally meet Mirai and his sister? Of all places. Is he that unlucky or what?

He could also remember when he went to school with Mariya. Again, Mirai saw him holding her hand and passed by her. He wanted to explain but no words uttered from his mouth, so after exchanging glances, he could not do anymore but look away wishing that she got the message through his stare.

Wait. Why is he thinking about her anyway?

Focus, Ryosuke, focus.

He tried to think about other funny things, hoping these could make him laugh and forget his misery. At last they reached the school ahead of time.

"We're early, Mariya-chan!" He joyfully exclaimed but the girl didn't reply, fixating her look to a tall good-looking guy in front of them. He never saw him before but his uniform indicated he too, was studying in Horikoshi.

"Why are you here?" Mariya asked, her expression was rather shocked.

"Mariya," The guy didn't bother to answer the question, but only called her name.

Ryosuke noticed that the girl hadn't made a move so he held her hand and intruded in the conversation, "Do you know that stranger, baby?"

Mariya got what Ryosuke meant. She tightened her hold of Yamada's fingers to indicate that they have some kind of relationship.

"Yes, I know him." She answered. "He's an acquaintance."

There was an obvious change in the expression of the guy. He was probably surprised by Mariya's words.

"Alright, let's go in." Yamada signaled to end the talk.

"Wait!" the stranger stopped. "You're from section A, right?"

"Yes, why?"

"Do you know, by any chance, a certain girl named Mirai?"

"Takahata--" Mirai exited the room but paused for a while and looked at Yamada's and Mariya's hands.

Mirai... Ryosuke wanted to shout in his mind.

"Mirai!" the tall guy called.

"Takahata-san!"

"Still calling me Takahata-san. I told you to call me Misaki."

"Alright Misaki-kun."

"Better."

"Whoa...you didn't tell me you're from Horikoshi too."

"I wanted to surprise you. By the way, here's your handkerchief."

"You found it. I've been looking for it. Thank you!"

"You left it last Saturday, so I thought I should return it to you."

Last Saturday? What were they doing together last Saturday?  Ryosuke wondered.

"Oh yeah. So I left it there."

"Uhn. I understand, you were in a hurry since it was already late."

They're together at a very late hour? What kind of relationship do they have?

The bell rang and everyone went inside their rooms as the classes will start soon.

"It's already time. See you soon." Shida let out a sweet smile.

"See you." Misaki waved.

And she's flirting with another guy. Yamada pouted.

"Come on inside, Ryosuke." Mariya suggested.

******

"Ahh...I feel dizzy." Mirai walked near the court, slow-paced.

"Hey, Mirai! Let's see if you can beat me." Ryosuke called from the basketball court.

"What do you mean?"

Ryosuke threw a basketball in the air and caught it with the right hand. "Let's have a duel."

"Sorry, I'm not in the mood."

"Who's not in the moo--" He wasn't yet finished when Mirai fainted to the ground. He hurried supposedly to carry the girl to the hospital but someone already initiated. It was Takahata Misaki.
