Chapter 7

"Who's that girl, Ryosuke?" Ryoko scolded.

"None of your business."

"Why are you flirting with another girl?"

"Another girl? I don't have a girlfriend yet, so why would you call that another girl?"

"So what do you call Mirai?"

"What?" Ryosuke laughed hysterically. "That nerd? Impossible."

"Don't try to fool me. If you like her, tell her directly. Don't hurt her feelings."

"I'm not hurting her feelings. You're assuming."

"You don't know how it feels for a girl to see her love with somebody else."

Ryosuke refused to listen and answered his ringing phone instead. "Hello? Mariya!"

"Mariya?" Ryoko echoed.

"Ryosuke! It's nothing actually. I just want to thank you for helping me out. I hope Mom would love it."

"I'm sure she will."

"I'll trust you then."

Ryosuke chuckled. "Silly."

"I had fun today. Thanks to you."

"No problem."

"So...see you next week?"

"Uhn. Good night, Mariya."

"Good night." Ryosuke ended the call and went upstairs. Ryoko only watched him.

"Alright. If you won't confess, I'll make you."

The next morning, Mirai walked slowly to the locker. She took off her shoes, hid them inside her locker, and put on the school shoes. Why couldn't she forget him laughing with her? His look when he met hers? And why couldn't she smile?

"Ohayou, Yama-chan!" She quickly turned to the door where she heard the greeting.

"Ohayou, Mariya-chan! You're together? Are you dating?" one of their classmates asked.

"Silly." Yamada laughed and grabbed Mariya's hand. "Come on. Ignore them."

Yamada stopped when he saw Mirai looking at her with a meaningful look. He looked at her for a while then walked away with Mariya.

"I guess I should admit I love him." Mirai whispered. "And I have to let him go."

She was walking on the streets, with noisy vehicles and people chatting. But for her, she could hear nothing but her heart beating out of pain of being heartbroken. She sat down and cried as much as she could, thinking of getting over...and letting go. Two simple words...yet hard to do.

"ARRGGH! I should move on! I'll eat." She rushed to the noodle store nearby and ordered a bowl of ramen. One was not enough, so she ordered one more, then two more.

"Here's your bill, Ms." the vendor told her, giving a small sheet of paper. She looked under the table to pick up her wallet in the bag but there was nothing in sight.

"My bag!" She rushed out of the store and ran to the seat where she cried a while ago. It was already gone. Someone should have taken it. She went back to the store, too embarrassed to face the vendor.

"Uhm...Mr. I'm sorry. I'm afraid I can't pay you right now." she flushed red while saying the words.

"Wha--" The vendor was about to speak when somebody offered a few bills in front of him.

"I'll pay for her."

"Thank you for paying for me. Don't worry. I'll pay you back." Mirai told the stranger who just saved her.  She smiled and took a look at him once more. He was tall and good-looking. He also seemed rich with his clothes and behavior. He wore black and that made him look more handsome.

"It's nothing. No need to worry." he spoke gently.

"No, it's embarrassing."

"You lost your bag, right? Here, take it." He took out a few more bills to her.

Mirai bowed, thanking the guy, and exchanged numbers with him. "I'll promise to pay you back."

"You don't have to. Take care Mirai."

"Arigatou gozaimasu, Takahata-san."
