The days leading up to their scheduled meeting, Kame’s heart fluttered at the thought of Pi and each night before he went to bed he rehearsed what he wanted to tell Pi. On Friday he rearranged his schedule so that he was able to arrive at the café that Pi had said to go to an hour early. He ordered a cup of coffee and headed to a back corner of the café that would allow them to have some privacy. He anxiously tapped his foot and every time the door to the café would open Kame perked up, but it wasn’t Pi. Across the street, he saw a figure looking at the café and he could have sworn it was Pi but wasn’t sure. At 3:30, Kame began checking his watch every few minutes in hopes that Pi would come.
Pi was standing across the street since 2:20 at the café, through the window, he saw that Kame was there in a secluded area with his fingers wrapped around a warm cup of coffee. His mind would change every few minutes about whether he should or shouldn’t follow through with meeting Kame, but remembering Ryo’s words, Pi mustered his courage up and entered the café.
When Kame saw Pi enter the café, he breathed a sigh of relief and stood up and waved to Pi who didn’t wave back but walked towards him. “Are you going to order anything?” Kame asked.
“I’m not really hungry.” Pi replied lifelessly.
“How are you doing?” Kame only asked it as a formality. Pi’s face looked gaunt and he had obviously lost weight and the bags that were under his eyes were ever so present.
“I didn’t come here to make small talk. I wanted to give you a chance to explain yourself. The chance that you didn’t give me.” Kame visibly flinched at what Pi said and his icy tone cut into him.
“Okay,” Kame agreed realizing that this might very be his one shot to explain what had happened.
“When I saw that article, I panicked, I didn’t know what I was saying or doing because all I could think was ‘it’s happening again.” I should have known better than to just believe a newspaper, but it was like something snapped in me and fear controlled me so much so that I created a horrific story to back up what I thought had happened. I trust you and I know that you’d never hurt me, but I couldn’t think straight at that moment. I hate myself for thinking that way and for not giving you a chance to explain.”
“And all that time you loved Jin.”
“At the beginning, I was still very much in love with Jin but gradually my feelings for you grew. I don’t know why I said that I loved Jin in my sleep, but it wasn’t true. I don’t love Jin, at least romantically anymore, I love you.” As Kame said the last phrase tears began to overflow from his eyes and saying them aloud made him realize even more the truth. He loved Pi more than he had ever loved Jin.
“Shut up.” Pi hissed, he couldn’t hear those words in fear that he would completely lose his resolve and run back into Kame’s arms, but he had been hurt, so unbelievably hurt. It wasn’t that simple to just pick up where they left off.
Kame looked stunned at Pi’s strong reaction.
“You didn’t tell me about meeting Jin.”
“I don’t know why, I wasn’t trying to hide anything, I just wasn’t sure how you’d react, things aren’t good between you and Jin and I wasn’t sure if you’d be jealous or angry that I was meeting with him, but me not telling you, it had the opposite effect.”
“And you hugged Jin.”
“It was just a hug between friends. He was asking about our relationship and when I explained that things were rough, he hugged me.”
Pi nodded and didn’t say anymore. Kame felt tears trickle down his face and with each second his panic increased. Pi suddenly stood up and without a word walked out, Kame ran out to follow him and Pi opened his trunk up. Inside, Pi pulled out a box. At first Kame was confused, but when Pi handed the box over to him and Kame saw the contents he began to sob. Inside was the movie that they had watched together when Pi visited Kame after Jin had told him about Meisa. On top of that was the gift that Kame had given him for their one month anniversary and the journal that Pi had kept all those years before they got together.. On top of everything though was the shell that Kame had given Pi the day on the beach when they walked hand in hand.
Kame covered his mouth to stifle his sobs but they escaped and despite the fact that he was attracting weird stares from other people Kame didn’t care. “I can’t be with you anymore.” Pi said coldly. “I appreciate you explaining everything to me, and I get it, I really do, but I couldn’t bear to be hurt again. Not like this.”
“Please I will do anything to get you back. I will tell you I love you every second of every day if that’s what you need.”
“I can only try to be friends with you right now,” Pi replied. “I think that our timing was off.”
“Bullshit.” Kame screamed at him. He knew that Pi was probably right, but he wasn’t going down without a fight.
“I’m not saying we’ll never be together again, but not now.”
“Then can we meet up again?” Kame asked timidly. “As friends.”
Pi looked exasperated, but nodded. “We can try being friends again.”
Kame blinked through his tears and forced a smile, but it wasn’t what he wanted. It wasn’t what he wanted at all, but something was better than nothing, right?
