Eclectic Reviewer July Wrap-Up

Aug 02, 2021 19:56

Oh wait, it's August now isn't it? Yeah, I should probably get around to posting last month's wrap-up.

L.A. Confidential, James Ellroy
It takes a while to adjust to the 1950s slang but it's totally worth it. One day I need to get around to watching the movie.

Our Kind of Traitor, John le Carré
In which a tennis match leads to dire consequences.

Rabid: A Cultural History of the World's Most Diabolical Virus, Bill Wasik & Monica Murphy
Rabies is a truly terrifying disease and I will always make sure my pets are vaccinated.

Chicago Poems, Carl Sandburg
Reread. Still haven't gone to Connemara yet. Must go soon to pet goats.

A Conjuring of Light, V.E. Schwab
This makes up for the boring Magic Olympics of the middle book.

Agent Running in the Field, John le Carré
Le Carré's final novel and a fitting send-off for his career. Especially since it's one of the few of his books with a somewhat happy ending.

The Unfinished Land, Greg Bear
*kicks this book*

Rinkitink in Oz, L. Frank Baum
The Oz book that's not an Oz book.

Cyrano de Bergerac, Edmond Rostand
The only thing I liked about this book was the footnotes that told me that Cyrano was a real person and much more interesting than the character in this play.

Trial by Fire: A Devastating Tragedy, 100 Lives Lost, and a 15-Year Search for Truth, Scott James
The story of the Station Nightclub fire in 2003 which is also the reason why no one listens to Great White anymore.

******

Also, I've started posting the Saturday Shorts exclusively on Wordpress since FB decided 1950s educational shorts are bullying and I forgot to cross-post them here. So let's just add them to the wrap-up too!

Ways to Settle Disputes
Highlights include a little girl whaling on her brother, a fight over Jerry's new baseball glove, and an older girl flipping out over a notebook.

Developing Self-Reliance
Mr. Carson won't help Alan develop self-reliance, but he will give him a list on the steps of how to do so. Which is helping so....

Fun of Being Thoughtful
In which I'm totally confused about the heroine's first name and Coronet serves up the creepy sibling incest vibes that we've come to expect from one of their family films.
