Here's an excerpt from an e-mail I recently sent to my dad (who listens to Rush Limbaugh everyday and thinks the country will soon be communist). There's the truth. People have to work all day and still skip eating to understand, and not by choice...

I grew up with no money.

I know lots of people who assume that I *do* have money to throw around. And can't understand why "little things" can't be afforded. My kids don't get a lot of what their friends do because we believe that it's more important for them to have experiences than material objects.

And sadly, you will find me in agreement with this statement about the people who run things. I wish it were not true.

I'm with you on this one. Growing up, my parents tried to live like they did have money even though they really didn't and got themselves into some financial problems. It's part of what ended their marriage. Even today, my father still doesn't understand why I don't spend every dime I earn and am so committed to trying to put some away, even though I still don't make much.
