Here's an excerpt from an e-mail I recently sent to my dad (who listens to Rush Limbaugh everyday and thinks the country will soon be communist). Now realize that my family does know what it's like to not have money, and everyone in the family would be considered successful with nice solid middle to upper middle class lifestyles.
People who are born with money and never have been without don't have
a clue of what it's like to not have money, to have to work hard to
have money. They begin to think that everyone that doesn't have money
is lazy, that it is simple to have money. And guess who runs this
country - mainly people who have always had money. And they've raised
a generation of children who believe they are entitled to have money
and nice things. The vast majority of people who run things, from
private industry to government, are people who have never had to
really worry about money.
Now I don't mean to insult anyone who has never had to really worry about money during their life. I have some friends for which this is the case. But it is true that a lot of times these type of people have trouble empathizing with people who are having money troubles. Plus, let me add that I really really hate the sentiment that the reason why someone is poor is because they're lazy. A lot of people in this country are "poor" and are hardworking individuals.
