I didn't think Fullmetal Alchemist the first did a really good job of balancing the various elements (humor/drama/filler), except where the military was concerned - but as I recall. the first episode of the first show used the two jokes about Ed and Al over and over and over again in a similar way.

After that it calmed down a bit. So you should be okay.

People often dress up (beyond the ordinary) for Easter, as it's one of the two most important holidays of the year, but that is probably going to be less true of a Presbyterian service than, say, a Catholic or Orthodox or Episcopalian one.

If you can, I would pack the skirt you are thinking of and a dressier one and then ask your grandmother which she thinks would be better. But obviously space is not limitless.

I see you are packing Sayers. I approve.

I felt the military characters balance drama and humor really well, but otherwise not so much ( ... )

One other thought is that the first episode of the first series also more or less threw you into the middle of things with no explanation, and followed that up with a very long flashback to explain it all - so it may not be a fan targeting problem, it may just be how Fullmetal Alchemist works.

Granted, it sounds like they threw you more stuff than they did in the first show, but it also seems like the opening story was less complicated to compensate.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure the next episode is going to cover Liore (as it was mentioned twice in this episode), so . . .we're just getting a longer piece of action than the first time. But, yeah, this was a pretty simple plot - Waterbending terrorist out for blood. I do like how they explain bit by bit what happened, but it'd still be somewhat perplexing if I hadn't seen a few episodes of the old one.

I guess all I'm thinking is that it may be more perplexing because you have seen a little of the old one.

Sort of like how the finale of Welcome to the NHK felt kind of abrupt because I was waiting for a certain part that they did not include in the anime. . .but the anime finale actually works fine on its own and is not itself abrupt.

But I'm also biased because replacing the Liore story with anything (even if only for a little while) has got to be better than. . .using the Liore story. That story really ticked me off and there was pretty much nothing about it that I liked.

. . . .well, Rose was cute.

Yeah. I spent the entire premiere trying to pretend I knew nothing about FMA, because otherwise it felt somewhat confusing and a little boring.

I remember liking Rose. Otherwise, I don't remember . . .uh . . .didn't Liore have something to do with some sort of false sun-based deity?

It has been about two years since I saw the Liore episodes, but it involved a Fatherly Religous Authority Figure who was actually evil! What a twist! I never would have known!

And as I recall there was a lot of Science vs. Faith stuff, but I might have misremembered that.

I don't hate the device automatically, but it really rubbed me the wrong way there.

Ah, yes. That is a really annoying twist. . .mostly because it's used so. Very. Often.
