As you may or may not know I have recently moved to Tallahassee, Florida to take my last undergraduate class at Florida State University. I moved in with my friend John on Friday and have been getting settled in, getting a job and starting class over the past few days. So now I think it is time for a mass e-mail because there has been a lot of good news as of recently…
I got a part-time job doing test scoring and data entry for the Florida Center for Reading Research (FCRR). The FCRR is an organization that is in the process of doing several projects evaluating the cognitive processes of children (ie figuring out how kids think). They give children several tests over several years that need to be scored and analyzed. They are going to give me enough hours and high enough pay that I think I will only have to work mornings Monday - Thursday and a full day on Friday. This works out great because I only have 2 classes and they are in the afternoons Monday - Thursday. Which means… work in the morning, class in the afternoon, free evenings and weekends! This should be a much more relaxing semester!
My classes are more good news. I am registered a cognitive psychology course, the course I need to have transfer back to Luther so I can graduate in May. I had my first class today and I really like the professor. Also, after running all over campus to get paperwork and signatures I also am registered for the graduate level psychology course on regression analysis. YAY! Psych-stats class! The professor seems really good and I am actually going to learn a lot. The first half of the class will be review, but I haven't had regression in a year so that will be good for me. Hopefully this class will help me feel more comfortable with my ability to do statistical analysis and more proficient with SPSS. (Those are 2 things that will be very helpful for graduate school). This class should also count towards my graduate work so that is good too.
Other good news, I shipped 4 boxes of my life here and they all made it! For those of you who haven't heard, there is a box of my stuff somewhere between Bowling Green, KY and Saint Paul, MN… it is highly unlikely that I will ever see my favorite sweatshirt ever again…
Other good news, I am the proud owner of the prettiest crockpot I have ever seen! John and I made up a holiday to celebrate my arrival in FL called 'Happy January 5th' and one of my presents was a crockpot. We are making a pork loin in it sometime this week and yes, I am rather excited about it… I get excited about silly things…
My last bit of good news is that things are going well with my apartment mate John. It is nice to only live with 1 person, especially one who can be silly and nerdy with me. He can also cook! He makes nummy pancakes! (Although it could be the nutella, strawberries and whipped cream that we put on them…)
I am getting used to Tallahassee and never want to drive here (there are some crazy, angry drivers…). I am enjoying the fact that our apartment is a 15-20 minute walk to the psychology building and that the bus system is free for FSU students. There are lots of places to shop nearby, even a grocery store on the way home from school. It looks like I won't be driving anywhere for awhile.
Oh, before I forget, because I keep forgetting to tell my parents… I got an e-mail from the University of Wisconsin-Madison the other day. It said:
"CONGRATULATIONS, I'm happy to inform you that you have been accepted for admission to the Quantitative Methods program in the Department of Educational Psychology at the University of Wisconsin - Madison."
I have been sort of hesitant to celebrate as they haven't found me any funding yet and I would need to visit before I would even know if I want to go there this fall, but it is nice to have an option for next fall. I am hoping to earn enough money to go visit sometime in February.
So thats my news... whats yours?
