What is the thing? I didn't even know the term until the Tenth Doctor asked about it. Do you mean there's an obsession with redheads, or that they are discriminated against as Catherine Tate joked about? Or just the term "ginger"? (I love the word now. I wish we used it. Heh.)
The thing that boggles me is the negative connotation. The more British TV I watch the more negative references I notice. I wonder about the origins of it, and it makes me a bit sad.
I didn't realize it could be negative, so I've probably missed a few references, though I'm sure I'll notice them now. I guess I was lucky in that way to grow up somewhere else! All I ever got was old ladies cooing over my hair color. (My hair is very thin and fine, like a baby's, which is kind of bleagh, so it was nice to have *something* people would occasionally compliment.)
