Well, I'm a week behind with this issue, but in my world you're caught up! Ep. 11 aired this past Saturday, but that hardly counts, it's only been a couple of days since. :)
I mean, he was trying to sell it, but I weren't buyin'.
I can definitely understand why one wouldn't. It's *Owen*. I am mysteriously disposed toward him, so I may be less than objective. He just... when he was so scared in bed with her, because he was possibly feeling something genuine, I really believed him. He's still an immature twat, I just inexplicably feel for him. Heh.
Thank you re: the ficlet!
Oh, hey, can you explain the stopwatch thing to me?
Hah, I wish. I was baffled too, and there was a discussion about it here. All I can say, after research, is that it may have to do with the fellows' desire to delay ejaculation, and perhaps doing so competitively, as in, timed. It's all barely-educated guessing on my part. o.0

Maybe I should have put a warning on that answer. It's just, if anybody knows what the stopwatch thing is about, they're not explaining it to me very well. I just need plain, clinical facts so I can understand! All I could find was a bunch of psychology articles on ED.
Re: *covers Ianto's eyes*rustydogNovember 20 2007, 01:53:58 UTC
I just don't know what *other* things you could do with a stopwatch, either. Boxcar derby? See whose egg boils fastest? Turtle races! Yes. I like that.
Oh dear, sweet friend. I've heard of that cheetah documentary. I can't watch any nature shows when I'm feeling shaky, they're worse than pretty much anything!
I'm making tea now. Delicious decaf Irish breakfast sent to me by a friend. For two good? And innocent and soothing... how do you feel about Elf? :)
Re: *covers Ianto's eyes*rustydogNovember 20 2007, 02:05:19 UTC
I did sort of read the fic! Through my fingers, skimming in parts. (I'm really glad you liked it, you should comment if you haven't! It's funny how different the fic circles are that you and I cruise. *g* I swear I plan to branch out someday.) It was potentially illuminating, but I still don't understand if that was one person's wild imagining of what "things you can do with a stopwatch" might mean, or the widely understood actual things you can do with a stopwatch. When Ianto said that line, did most people know very well what he was talking about?
I feel like that time in high school when the term "oral sex" came up in an educational film the church youth group was showing, and I asked the youth group leader, a grandmother, to explain the term to me. And she told me to look it up, so I looked up "oral" and it was like my brain just refused to put two and two together on its own. And then I can't read smut, but I have no problem with thorough, clinical descriptions of same. Sigh. A piece of work, I am.

I'm 99.9% sure that stopwatches aren't inherently kinky.
I think it was a nice litle moment because it shows that Ianto is slightly awkward in propositioning Jack but still committing to it -- that naughty little smirk is what sells it as proposition more than what he says. And he knows Jack well enough to know that he's imaginative enough to find seven sexual uses for random objects in two seconds flat.
Re: *covers Ianto's eyes*rustydogNovember 20 2007, 20:22:46 UTC
I like that reading. :)
I think what contributed to my confusion was Owen's teasing comments to Ianto earlier - "give him a stopwatch and he's happy" - maybe it's just Owen's way, but they seemed innuendo-laden. I couldn't figure any other reason Owen would say that. So the fact that Owen *and* Ianto used what I took as stopwatch innuendo made it seem less random. Maybe it's a Torchwood in-joke?
... or I guess it's possible Ianto just used the stopwatch as the random object to propose for naughty uses *because* Owen was teasing him about it earlier, so he was thinking about it. Is that kind of what you're saying? Like, it could have been a clipboard or an umbrella or whatever.
Ha, I'd like to see what fic writers came up with if we substituted a bunch of other random objects for "stopwatch" in that scene. The human imagination is limitless! :)
Re: *covers Ianto's eyes*taffimaiNovember 21 2007, 18:07:16 UTC
Actually, I didn't read Owen's teasing of Ianto in that way. It was more like a, "Ianto is so incredibly structured and buttoned up that anything used for measuring or organization is going to get him off." But it could just as easily have been a label maker for the purposes of Owen teasing him over it.
Which makes the Jack-seduction even more interesting, because there's an element of, "If you take me up on this, you're getting me, not just a random body."

Aww! Hee! I have read some fics like that. I still sometimes (okay, a lot) read smutty Ninth Doctor fics like that, for instance. Or if a smutty fic is *too* good, like it's hitting so many buttons that I'm all OMG They Are Literally Reading My Mind Help Help and I feel like I have to go hide under my desk. Yep.
I did just comment. I got distracted and forgot back when I read it.

Heeeeee. Truer words, and all that.

When Ianto said that line, did most people know very well what he was talking about?I would've said "brilliant imaginings." :P But yeah... if their minds work like mine in the non-PG sense, there's a really good chance they at the very least leapt to it being a sexual reference. For me

Re: *covers Ianto's eyes*rustydogNovember 20 2007, 20:33:03 UTC
For me, it didn't create a fully-formed imagining, because there are a lot of possibilities, but I knew they all had to do with playing some sort of sex-related game which would be very fun to read about.
Okay, I think that's mainly what I was wondering. It explains why I wasn't able to find anything specific (other than Torchwood things) by googling "stopwatch sex game" and the like. I just couldn't imagine any of the things Ianto was implying Jack would be able to, but it's enough to know that he probably could have picked anything and Jack would have been able to do something with it. And other people were able to follow those lines fine. :)
I'm sorry you got such a non-answerYeah, I don't see what's wrong with telling a 15-year-old "one person puts their _____ on the other person's ______ with the intent of sexual pleasure" but I know it was asking a lot of that poor missionary woman who was married in the 1950s. Oh well. That's what I have internet friends for, right? *g

Man alive, that was a good fic. Guh. I think I need to send the author a fruit basket or something.
