I've got Welsh voices running through my head, which is fantastic, but all they will say is "I am the only gay in the village" and
"Rhiannon's minge is gettin' cold."
I watched the first season of Little Britain last week, and I know it's broad sketch comedy, but so help me, I'm getting invested in some of the characters. They're all funny and ridiculous, but most of them have a certain amount of pathos in their story. They're self-deluded or being taken advantage of or they're just desperately trying to be something they're not. I think that's in the acting-Matt Lucas and David Walliams are really committed to these characters, and somehow they make them human even while they're charicatures.
My favorite is Daffyd (which I thought was spelled Daveth) from the mining town of
Llandewi Breffi (which I thought was spelled Clandwy Breffy) whose identity centers around the idea that he's "the only gay in the village"-so he can't accept evidence to the contrary. He might have to have gay sex! But he's got such a
sweet face (seen in that picture feeling the prick of a nurse's needle - an actual srynge, silly), and he's so childlike, even in his
ridiculous, hilariously tight (and sometimes
transparent) outfits. I just want to cuddle him. Also:
the pub where he hangs out is "The Scarecrow and Mrs. King"! And the
barmaid is named Myfanwy. ::obscure fandom squee::
Tom Baker is the most perfect person they could have gotten as the crazy, delighted narrator. He says these absurd things with such gusto, you can just imagine his wild eyes and sloppy white hair as he says them.
Wish me luck in the last day of summer classes. I've lost the students so thoroughly now, I'm contemplating showing Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure so we can discuss historical figures. ::headdesk::
