Roadtrip pics, part 1

May 24, 2010 19:33

Registration today threatened to be one of our most harrowing ever, but turned out to be one of the smoothest, thank goodness. Crossing my fingers tomorrow goes as well, then the next couple of weeks while my boss is away. I actually had a full hour for lunch and used some of it for labeling roadtrip photos.

Here's the whole set: Great Plains road trip or slideshow. But there are 225 items, so only if you're *really* interested. I've picked out a few for this post.

Weird roadside sights

Giant morel mushroom

Jerky fudge... or maybe those are supposed to be two separate things

Offensive political homemade billboards, Missouri can has them!

In remote Wamego, Kansas

Much "!??" from my mom and me when we saw this, but this article explains the interesting historical background. If I understand correctly, the congregation who helped build the church was made up of New England natives who moved to Kansas so that they could vote for Kansas to enter the United States as a free state and not a slave state. (*Very* important issue in the time leading up to the American Civil War.)

In Abilene, KS - you don't see many of these Sinclair dinosaurs anymore!

I don't even know.

Independence, MO

This is the Mormon temple and welcome center. The spire is striking and hard to miss!

Truman museum

I was very interested in this wristwatch, which was made before wristwatches were common -- actually a pocketwatch inserted in a specially made wrist bracelet. You can read the info card better here.

Check out the ear of corn.

Pete!

1950s model home: my mom said her family had that TV and that refrigerator.

One of my favorite parts of the museum was the displays of 1950s print media, including some seriously scary propaganda posters. I'd love to read this issue of Popular Science.

This was a child's educational card-matching game.

WTH?! No wonder people were scared! The country is on fire and communist soldiers are strangling people with their hands!

Artificial insemination, all new!

Truman tried for a national health program, so it's fitting he and Bess received the first Medicare cards. :)

This was at the Truman home/museum.

In the next batch, the Eisenhower museum, Greyhound Hall of Fame, and lots of wee baby goslings.
