The Russian language belongs to the group of the Slavic languages that originated from the old Slavic language.

The Russian alphabet (its old Slavic version) was created in 863 by two brother-priests
from the Byzantine Empire (Eastern part of the Roman Empire).

Their names were Cyril and Methodius.
