So I just finished an awesome article in Sports Illustrated about Stan Musial. I already knew he was awesome because he is a classic Cards player and a great nickname, but, dude! Stan the Man is even cooler than I thought! Ninety years old, married to his high school sweetheart for seventy of those years, quit smoking when he realized he was an important role model to kiddos, always cordial to fans, signs EVERY autograph, never got thrown out of game, the guy's impossible. Or as my mother says, a saint. I'm just going to go with really good guy. Go out and google it people, it's worth a read. The little stories are quite delightful.
Oh, and he was once voted the Cubs' favorite baseball player. Nice.
I don't read as much SI as I used to. Ever since Rick Reilly and Steve Rushin left, the writing is not quite as quality. Still love Tom Verducci's baseball features, still love the photo spreads, and sometimes there are just cool articles. Especially when they're about sports I could care less about (hello, college football!). But without Rick Reilly especially, the magazine has lost some zest. My dad told me I should apply for the job, but I definitely don't have enough knowledge on sports, but it would be cool. And I would be a damn sight better than that one woman who sometimes writes the editorial, Serena Sports Gossip Girl or whatever her name is. After that stupid article on sports scandale of the year, I was like shut up woman! We're not supposed to encourage bad behavior in children, I think the same should go for adults! And that's really what the Tiger Woods thing boiled down to, for me, at least. Adults behaving badly. Man, that article was lame, I did not care to know about the women Woods was dealing with, I did not care for their opinion, and I definitely think the author had decided to beat a dead horse into the ground. Hello! The whole frickin' feature was about the same thing, and infinitely better written! Choose a new topic.
I miss the vim and verve of Rick Reilly.
Anyway, it's Friday, yay! I read on livejournal sometime within the last month about finding three good things in your day, and trying to focus on them to make things better. I think it's a really good idea, because that's usually easy to do. Like yesterday was a rotten day, but I had a tasty bagel for breakfast, the radio played lots of good stuff on the drive home, Burn Notice was awesome, and Mom bought Chinese for dinner. Yes, I know that's four, but a bad day has to compensate a bit. Today's three good things: nothing insane happened at work (I have actually found I might like to work in carload operations, or at least make friends with the nice girl I worked with there), that awesome Stan Musial article to feast my eyes upon, and swing dancing tonight! Hmm, well swing has become a bit of a double-edged sword lately, with Lee out of town, the Cold War still in full frigid phase, and creepy guys loitering around. Even if I did elbow that one guy in face on accident, maybe he'll learn to keep his distance. Certainly now that I can properly throw an elbow. I told Jack about my inadvertant elbowing, and he goes, "You threw a six to twelve elbow! You're illegal!"
So now I know the proper technique. Huzzah.
Let's see, Cowtown class lists came out today. I have to ask exactly how advanced the the advanced classes are, because Dan and Gabi are only teaching advanced classes, and I'd really like to take one of theirs again, especially the essential tricks class. So much fun. Plus they're having a stunt class this month for the whole month that I'm interested in taking. And my book club book has arrived so I can plow through that sucker before Wednesday and see how part 2 pans out for our interpid heroine. Tomorrow there will also be cupcakes, partying, and hopefully a good time had by all.
And what am I going to wear tonight? Hmm.
