It took me forever to finish this one.
This is mostly due to the fact that it was my "lunchtime" book, and during this span of time I stopped going out to lunch every day. Instead, days like today, I eat at my desk, saving money and time.
It's also because of "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath" which almost made me stop reading it. I just couldn't get through it.
But I'll try to summarize, using
princeofcairo's "Tour de Lovecraft" to remind me of the stories that I read a long long time ago.
Polaris - Eh. Whatever. Didn't care.
The Doom that came to Sarnath - I liked how it's referred to as the "DOOM" in all caps. Not bad. But I'm not a huge fan of Lovecraft's fantasies.
The Terrible Old Man - I know, I know, it's racist, but I liked it.
The Tree - kind of a Greek tale - I liked it even less than most of his fantasy stuff.
The Cats of Ulthar - the exception that proves the rule. I really dug this story. Then again, currently I have a weakness for kitties.
From Beyond - really don't remember anything about it.
The Nameless City - ditto
The Moon-bog - again, ditto.
The Other Gods - kind of interesting.
Hypnos - eh.
The Lurking Fear - I kind of liked it.
The Unnameable - Don't remember much
The Shunned House - I really liked this one. Didn't quite figure out how the elbow works into it, but hey.
The Horror at Red Hook - reminded me a bit of Call of Cthulhu the RPG. Not bad.
In the Vault - no memory
The Strange High House in the Mist - kind of interesting but seemed kind of pointless.
Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath - Seriously. It just went on and on and on and didn't make sense and required a lot of reading before-hand in Lovecraft (i.e., do NOT read this story if you haven't read the Cats of Ulthar and a number of other stories). This one almost stopped me, I had to force my way through it.
The Silver Key and Through the Gates of the Silver Key - not as bad as Dream-Quest, but not stories I'm going to race to re-read.
The Dreams in the Witch House - kind of weird, kind of bizarre, rather kind of good and scary.
The Shadow out of Time - a fitting conclusion - I loved this story. It's just great. It's one of the first Lovecraft stories I'd ever read, and I highly recommend it.
There we go. So it's been a while - and it's been weird, and I really should write these closer to the time that I was reading them. But whatever.
