The Difference Engine is a collaborative novel between William Gibson and Bruce Sterling. It takes place in an alternate England of the mid to late 1800s.
Basically, the Babbage Engine - often just called the "Engine" - actually worked, on a scale that grows with size. Thus, a bigger Engine works better - though is perhaps more finicky.
The story is disjointed but connected by a pack of "punch cards" - thought to be a gambling modus, a program that predicts gambling outcomes.
It's a thick book, densely written. Not a fast read by any means. It's a good book, well written, very descriptive - but it's not my usual cup of tea.
But it is an interesting steampunk idea.
(I feel like I should talk more about it - but honestly, I don't know what
