Layoff news and a scare that turned out good

i was scheduled for a full day of work at William-Sonoma last Friday. Earlier in the week i read that W-S was going to cut 18% of their work force. i walked into the store, said hello to coworkers, and tried to log-in on the time clock. First try said my badge was not recognized so i tried it again but got the same error. Did i have my number wrong? i pulled out my work card to double check my number and it was the right one but it just wasn't working. My heart sank a bit because of the news and i knew the season was coming to an end but then my GM spoke up from her office where she was busy working with someone. She told me my card/number wouldn't work but "not to worry it's a good thing." She told me she would meet with me later.

i went to work. Typical weekday of helping unload and sort a delivery truck, unboxed, price checked, and put all the new product away in the store warehouse. After my lunch break at 2pm i finally got to meet with my GM and she had a lot of good things to say. First it was the bad news which i already knew and she told me that she did have to let one person go. Then she presented me with a new employee card with a new number. With a big smile she told me of discount benefits i've earned with my new card including the ability to shop at any W-S, affiliate stores and even online with my new card. i knew the Smooch would love that. Of all the seasonal associate staff they hired for the holidays i was the only one that made the transition to part time associate. i was so surprised. i felt bad for some of my coworkers like a fellow stock person that was really hoping they could stay because they felt like i do and just enjoy our jobs. Before i left the little meeting i got to share with my GM and the person she was training, a new GM for another store, how much i enjoyed working there and the rush i would get towards the end of my shift which was always a feeling like i just wasn't done yet even if my shift was coming to an end. i didn't really understand why i felt that way but she remarked how she heard from coworkers that i asked if i could stay a bit later to finish up. She said that was just another good reason why they kept me.
