Notes: Long time no write, you know. Things have been hellaciously bad for me. I don't even know where to begin. This is the first thing I've completed for these two in a little while, but I have several drafts in waiting. This scene was inspired by the song Shine because I've really been in a RWBY kind of mood lately.

He was sitting on the marbled floor with earphones in. He held his phone horizontally. Colours from the video flickered across his face. The blonde wandered over towards him, feet scuffing against the ground as she moved. He didn't hear or even seem to notice that she was approaching. She stood there quietly, wanting to see how long it would take for him to notice. He reached up, rubbing under his nose as he watched the video. The thumb of his other hand brushed across the timeline on his phone. She huffed and crouched down. She wrapped her arms around her legs, leaning over towards him. He glanced over to her, suddenly aware that she was there. He reached over with his right and tugged out his left earbud, gaze setting back to the video.

"Hey."

"What're you watching?"

He grunted. "Some web show I'm kinda hooked on."

"What's it about?" She lowered her head, resting her chin on her forearms.

"Girls in a combat school. Everything's a gun."

"Everything's a gun?" she repeated curiously.

He nodded. "You gotta watch it."

"Just might."

She turned her body and finally sat down, back touching the wall. She scooted closer, and he placed his earbud back in. He pulled out his right one and offered it to her. She took it with a small noise, and he rewound the scene again. She leaned over, pressing her shoulder against his. She laughed softly at the scene playing out.

"A school prom?"

"Mm."

"What, vicariously living through teenagers?"

"Just picking up some dance moves for senior prom."

"What? Wait, what? You're going?"

He paused the video as the redhead threw her arms up in victory. He glanced over to his companion, brows raised. She stared up at him, mouth grinning.

"You're not going to senior prom," she said with a laugh.

He furrowed his brows. "Yeah, I am."

"That doesn't seem like your kind of thing."

He shrugged. "I like dancing, and some of my friends are going."

"You like dancing?" She pressed further, the laugh bubbling in her words.

"Are you going to prom?" He asked instead, voice a bit exasperated.

"Now I am," she said. She tilted her head then. "And what's this about dance moves?"

He tilted his phone slightly. "This scene's got a dance 'm trying to learn. Gonna try and sneak it in."

"Oh, shut up - let me see."

She scooted back into place as he pressed the play button again. She adjusted the earbud in its place. The scene continued with the black haired boy looking confused. His redheaded friend grabbed him by the wrist and pulled him towards the dance floor. They joined two other people and started a choreographed dance. The dance itself was short, but the footwork was intense. The blonde raised her brows, lips parting slightly as she watched. She glanced down to her friend's legs, trying to imagine him doing the same. She came up blank. When the scene was over, the brunet paused the video again, and the blonde pulled her earbud out.

"I didn't think you could dance, let alone had an interest in it."

"I can dance pretty well."

She fought every urge with every bone in her body not to shout "Show me" at him. He pulled his legs up and groaned, pulling the earbuds out of the jack. He dropped them down to the ground and navigated to his music. He turned up the volume before handing his phone to the blonde. She snatched it with too much eagerness. He didn't comment on it and took a few steps away from her.

It was the same song as the one in the video, but the dance steps were completely different. She watched, fascinated, careful not to accidentally press anything and change the song. She wasn't sure where to focus. His arms swung up over his head - that grabbed her attention. His feet shuffled in a way she couldn't even begin to understand. That held her attention too. She leaned back and watched him until the song was over. He held his position for a few seconds before finally relaxing. He reached his hand out for his phone once he was close enough. She handed it over quickly, staring at him in awe.

"That was amazing."

"Thanks," he replied, turning the music off once again.

"How come you just don't do that at prom?"

He lifted his head, looking at her. "Because it was improvised."

"Shut up," she said softly.

He laughed gently, tipping his head down. They fell into silence for a some seconds. The blonde smacked her hand against her thigh.

"Let's do it. You and me, let's do that dance during senior prom."

"You're serious?"

"I'm serious." She swayed her head before looking back up to him. "I'm not a super dancer, but I've one of the highest scores on the dance machine at the arcade."

"Good. Rhythm is a requirement."

"Oh hush."

He laughed and then thought about it for a bit. He nodded his head, smiling to one side.

"Let's do it, you and me."

"Alright!"

"And a couple'a other people."

She held up her hands. "Fair enough. If we really want to sell this, we've gotta have a group." She pointed at him. "And you need a dress."

She bounded up to her feet. He stared up at her.

"Wait what?"

"We've got to make this legit."

"How come I've got to wear the dress?"

"Because I'm pretty sure this was your idea."

He paused for a moment and let out a long breath. Yeah, it was. She grinned at his silent defeat and placed her hands on her hips. He stood up. He dusted his backside off and reached down to pull up his backpack. She started asking questions about both the dance and the show as they walked. He replied with growing interest.

They planned out the dance moves and how they could convince the prom organisers to let them add in music. Even though prom wasn't for another four months, they kept their hopes up for their time to shine.
