Nari looked around anxiously as she stood waiting for the photographer to come and see her. She had been over the moon when she found out that the photographer was looking for fresh faces and that her agent had recommended her! No more would she be modeling for Sears and JC Penney catalogs; no, that was for amateurs and she had been modeling for a while now. It was time for a promotion.
Hearing footsteps, she turned and saw the photographer and two others behind with makeup bags. They all looked like they had other places to be other than with Nari, but she didn’t care. She was getting a chance to show her stuff.
“Hello…I am Jean Clarke, your photographer. Nariko Mizuno. That’s you I assume?” She was asked in a monotone voice.
Nari rushed forward to him in excitement.” “Yes! Thank you so much for this opportunit…”
A hand was raised up for her to stop talking, which she did by biting her lip. “You don’t look Asian.”
Nari blinked in confusion; what did that have to do with anything? “Um…I’m sorry?”
Jean waved her away, “No…I just didn’t think you were as dark as you are. But we’ll work with this.”
Following the curt man over to the backdrop where a camera was stationed by, Nari was instructed to sit on a stool. “We’ll start shooting in about five minutes. These two will do your makeup.” At her worried look, he tried to make some kind of smile. “Don’t worry, I’ll make you look good. I’m adept at my job.” Nariko nodded and closed her eyes, feeling makeup applied to her face and lips. At five minutes, it was time just as Jean had said.
After fixing her in a pose he wanted, Jean started snapping pictures. Nari stared straight at the camera, not daring to move-as a model she knew better to just be moving all over the place. Despite her frozen body, she felt her heart bump even faster as she watched the unimpressed expression on the photographer’s face. Was she not doing a good job?
“Turn this way.” She heard him say and she turned her head slight to face the camera.
“Look up to the left towards me.” Nari obeyed staring at him from the corner of her eye.

The shoot went for about fifteen more minutes and they were the most excruciating fifteen that Nari could think of. Then suddenly the camera was put down and Jean just stared at her. Nari gave a nervous smile. Was she really that bad?
Then in that next instant, Jean grinned wide and only said one word to her.
“Extraordinary.”
