“No! This isn’t a stupid love story. It’s an adventure story!”
“Well… love can be an adventure.”
“A stupid adventure maybe.”
“That’s mean. I think love stories are exciting.”
“I like the stories about monsters and dragons and fighting the best. Those are the stories I want to tell.”
“But those are scary!”
“No they’re not.”
“They’re scary to hear in the dark…”
“Fine. Where was I?”
“They were falling in love!”

Her mother always got angry when she found out that Vala had been climbing trees. It was dangerous, she said. Vala could fall and hurt herself. Not to mention all the dresses she had ripped and torn. Vala didn’t think her mother had ever climbed a tree before. If she had surely she would understand why Vala couldn’t just stop. There was something freeing about standing higher than you had ever stood before. The air was different. The sun shone brighter. Hugging the trunk of the tallest tree Vala felt lighter. She felt like she could float far away.
