Note(s): This takes place in 1146. Maud's mother is Cosette Puchot, sixth and final queen of Henri I, making her the step-sister of the current Mondian monarch, Henri's child, and the half sister of Princess Vivianna, who she has been looking after in the capital. Maud is nineteen in this piece, having been born in 1127 to her mother's first marriage.
It was clear she would have to take over this situation. As Maud arrived at the estate of her step-father and mother, she could tell that things were in disarray. The servants had no idea what to do.
“Can you tell me where the master of the house is?”
“I believe he’s in his study, my lady. But I wouldn’t interrupt him if I were you,” a timid maid said.
“Why is that?”
“He’s in a nasty temper at the moment.”
Maud smiled. “I shall deal with him.”
Maud climbed up the stairs to the first floor. She turned to the left and walked toward the main study and knocked quietly on the door.
“Go away!”
“Gilles, it is me! Open up the door.”
She heard scuffling behind the door. She waited, but no one came to the door. She turned the knob and found it unlocked, so she went inside.
“What the fuck?”
Maud looked around. The study was a mess. Books were thrown on the floor and papers were everywhere. Her step-father was sitting haphazardly in his chair.
“Hello Gilles.”
“What do you want?”
“I’ve come to arrange mother’s funeral and the distributing of her will and the care of the child.”
“I’ll take care of that,” Gilles growled.
“Ah, but you haven’t taken care of it yet. Mother has been dead for a full week and no funeral has been planned. People are starting to worry.”
“I don’t give a fuck about people, little Maud.”
Maud sighed. “Gilles, she would not want to you to be like this. You must pull yourself together for her sake.”
“How do you know what she wanted?”
“I am her daughter, Gilles.”
“Yes, you are,” Gilles said standing up. He came to stand before Maud. He gently touched her chin.
“You look a lot like her.”
“I know,” Maud said.
Gilles nodded and turned away from Maud.
“I’ll take care of everything,” Maud said to his back.
“Alright,” Gilles said.
Maud smiled slightly.
“Where is the baby? I shall go check on him.”
“He’s in the nursery,” Gilles said reclaiming his seat.
Maud stepped over the books and looked back at her step-father before closing the door behind her.
