Mari peeked into the lunch room. She wondered what they were having today. Whatever it was, she decided that she wouldn’t have dessert. Her jeans were getting too tight.

She moved forward in the line. She picked up a plastic tray and placed it on the metal counter. The boy next to her grinned at her as they moved down the line, she grimaced at him.

She looked at the counter. It looked like they were having steak tips and mashed potatoes. That was good; it was one of her favorites. She smiled at the lunch lady as she ladled the steak and potatoes onto her tray. She turned and frowned as she saw what was up next.

“Corn!” Mari whispered horrified. She hated corn. It was the nastiest vegetable that had ever been planted. Ever since her father had forced her to eat the corn at Thanksgiving of 02, she couldn’t stand it.

“Would you like some sweetie?” The woman asked.

“No, thank you,” Mari said pushing her tray down the counter. She looked longingly at the fudge brownies. They were her favorite, but she had gained five pounds in the last month. She sighed and picked up her milk. She paid the $4.25 at the computer counter before going to the table she shared with Alexa and Daniel and some of his friends.

“You gonna eat that steak?” Aruna Bajpai asked as she sat down next to him.

Kamon Aimod elbowed Aruna in his side causing the other boy to grip his side in pain. Daniel laughed, while Luke shook his head. Alexa grinned at Aruna.

“Why didn’t you get corn?” Luke asked as she picked up her fork and dug into her potatoes.

“She hates corn,” Daniel and Alexa said to together. They grinned at each other before shouting “Jinx!”

“I said it first, Smith!” Alexa said.

Daniel laughed. “I so said it first El-Amin. You’re the one that’s jinxed.”

Alexa turned to Mari.

“Who said it first, Mari?”

Mari chewed her potatoes and swallowed. She looked up at Daniel and grinned.

“Alexa said it first.”

“You are lying through your teeth, Rodriguez!”

Mari grinned, but didn’t say anything. Alexa smiled at the both of them before tucking into her hummus.

“So hey Mari, why doesn’t that Wilcox girl ever come to lunch?” Luke asked.

“Jennika says she doesn’t want to eat the school’s shitty food,” Mari said sipping her milk.

Luke grinned. “I can’t say I blame her there, but she could always bring a lunch from home.”

“She could,” Mari agreed.

“Why are you so interested in her anyway?” Kamon asked.

Luke shot him a look. “No reason, I was just wondering.”

Kamon raised his eyebrows but didn’t say anything else.

“So Mari are you coming to our practice after school?”

Mari looked up. The Dirty Rebels had booked a big gig up in the city. Daniel and the others had been practicing for hours on end. She had been at every one of them. But tonight she needed to do her physical science homework.

“I don’t know Daniel, I’ll see if I can make it okay?”

Daniel smiled.

“Poor Danny boy can’t have his band practice without his girl sitting in, young love at its finest,” Aruna cooed.

Mari blushed as Daniel picked up his milk carton and threw it at Aruna.

“Now that’s not very nice, Danny boy. What would Mrs. Smith say?”

“Kiss my ass, Bajpai!”

“No thanks, I don’t know where that thing has been.”

Mari tried to hide her smile, but she couldn’t. Daniel grinned at her but didn’t say anything else.
