“I hope you are all ready for your test,” Mrs. Brannon said handing out the test papers.
Jessica looked up from her phone surprised. She raised her hand.
“Yes, Ms. Johnson?” Mrs. Brannon said from the front of the room.
“When did you announce this test?”
“Last week Ms. Johnson,” Mrs. Brannon said looking at her watch. She looked up at the classroom.
“You have the entire class period to finish your tests. If you paid attention and you read the book, then you will pass. If you did not, then you are out of luck. You may begin.”
Everyone flipped over their tests except Jessica. She looked around. Mrs. Brannon had returned to her seat and was looking at the computer.
Jessica turned over her test. She hadn’t even picked up the novel that Mrs. Brannon had assigned for the class to read and she had totally zoned out when the class had discussions.
She turned to her right.
Ryan Biermann was busy scribbling on his paper. She wondered if he really knew the material or was he just making it up as he went along? She decided she’d had to chance it.
She tore a piece of paper out of her notebook.
Help a girl out?-Jess
She folded it and threw on his desk. She looked up to see if Mrs. Brannon had seen anything, but she was busy typing.
He picked up the note and looked at it. He looked over at her and smirked before writing something on the paper. He threw it back.
I’ll help because you look pathetic. But don’t get any ideas.
She looked up and frowned at him. He smirked and pushed his paper over slightly so she could peek.
She hurriedly copied his answers, hoping and praying that he knew what he was doing. Her father would kill her if she got another bad grade on her test.
Suddenly there was a movement. Ryan pulled back his test and Jessica focused on hers.
“Five more minutes until the bell,” Mrs. Brannon said returning to the front of the class.
Ryan put down his pencil. Jessica looked at her paper. She only had two unanswered questions left; she could just guess those.
She put A for the first answer and D for the last. The bell rang and everyone stood up. Mrs. Brannon walked over to the door.
“Hand me your papers as you leave,” Mrs. Brannon said.
Jessica picked up her bag and walked over to Mrs. Brannon. She handed her the test. She kept her head down as she did.
Once she was safely out of the teacher’s sight. She sighed.
“Next time you should actually read the material,” Ryan said passing her.
She looked up. He was laughing at her! If he had purposely tricked her, she would get him back. No one messed with Jessica Annabelle Johnson and got away with it.
