“Look at my bebè. She’s growing up!” Juana cooed to her sister over the phone.
“Abuela!”
Juana blew a kiss at Mari before turning back to the phone.
“She reads so fast, Elvira! Just last year, she got an award of having a certain amount of points and-“
Juana stopped. She held the phone closer to her ear.
“Of course she didn’t cheat, Elvira. How could you say something like that? Your grandchildren are the ones that cheat after all.”
Mari sighed and turned away from her grandmother. She knew that Juana was about to get into an argument with her sister, they always did. Every Friday, they would get together on the phone and swap stories about their children and grandchildren.
Mari looked at the baby picture of her on her grandmother’s wall. She had been a cute baby, but sometimes it seemed as if Juana still thought she was still that innocent little baby.
“Bebè!” Juana’s voice came from behind her.
Mari turned and was surrounded with her grandmother’s strong perfume.
“You want something to eat, bebè? I can fix something.”
“No, thank you Abuela. I need to go anyway, I have homework to do.”
Juana smiled at her. She kissed Mari’s cheek.
“You’re such an intelligent girl. Just like your mother at your age.”
Mari smiled. She didn’t want to tell her grandmother that she was flunking her geometry class. No need to burden her with it.
“Thank you, Abuela. I’ll call you when I get home.”
Juana smiled. Mari turned and walked down the hall and opened the front door. She smiled back at her grandmother before closing the door.
“My sweet bebè,” Juana said looking at the baby picture.
