“You know,” Dean mumbled through blue lips, “there is a reason I hate water.” He clutched the wool blanket to him tightly.

“If you’d been paying attention, you wouldn’t have fallen in the river,” Carrie told him, stacking some more wood on the fire.

“I had to get the dog out.” He shivered and she took pity on him, scooting over and wrapping her arms around him.

“Lie down, Mr. Hero,” she said, waiting until he’d done so before snuggling in next to him beneath the blanket. “We’ll get you warm in no time flat.”

He settled in, shaking subsiding.

It was Mal who spotted the old hunting cabin first and he volunteered to get some logs for the fireplace they found there in exchange for Morgan making dinner. Exhausted and feeling the effects of the previous day’s fight, Morgan was more than willing.

After a brief and unsatisfying dinner with the remains of their supplies, Morgan sat down by the light of the fire to take stock of her injuries, jumping when arms came around her to help press down a bandage. Mal kissed her cheek and pulled her close. She relaxed into him, enjoying both sources of warmth.

Russ pulled off his boots and stacked them neatly just inside the door, pushing it quietly shut behind him. He dropped his bag and crept up the stairs, peeking his head first into Will’s room before letting himself into his bedroom. He smiled at the sight of Shannon sprawled across three-quarters of the bed and quickly changed before crawling in beside her.

He settled in, still shivering a bit from the cold. As if she’d heard or felt him, Shannon rolled onto her side, grabbing his shoulder and tugging him over. She wrapped an arm around him. “Welcome home, Russ.”

“No!” The shouted word still lingered in the darkened room as Sage started awake, heart pounding, eyes too wide.

Nate rolled over, still half-asleep. “Nightmare?”

She nodded and rubbed at her eyes as he sat up, wrapping his arms around her.
“Everyone’s fine, I promise.”

“Danny…”

“Is asleep in the next room.”

She nodded again. “Okay,” she whispered, shivering as the chilled night air cut through her thin shirt.

Nate pulled the blanket up around them both. “Remember, just breathe. Steady. In and out.”

Sage did as ordered, feeling herself slowly calm. “I love you, Nate.”

“I love you too.”

“Our son asked me today why I’d never looked for someone else. I know he didn’t mean anything by it, but I could never replace you. It seems silly, since we didn’t even have five full years, but it’s true. You’d be so proud of us, Diana. Yeah, I know, it’s the first time I’ve ever included myself, but it’s time, don’t you think?”

Sorin reached out and brushed a bit of dirt from the tombstone.

“Thanks for seeing a part of me that I couldn’t see myself for so long and for our son. I will always love you.”
