Story: The Mondian Chronicles
Title: Blessings
Summary: Therese prays to the Holy Mother for the birth of a son.
Notes: Therese is the wife of King Henri I of Monde and the mother of his first legitimate daughter, Marie.
Therese bent her head in the Royal Chapel. Her ladies followed suit.
No one spoke as the queen whispered her prayers. She touched her head to the floor before looking up at the statue of the Holy Mother, Ambroise.
“Please Holy Mother bless me with a son. It has pleased the Father to give me a healthy daughter, but I must have a son. I am a loyal and just servant.”
Therese was silent before kissing the statue’s feet. The chapel was calm for which Therese was ever thankful.
She rose and her ladies made the sign of the triangle on their chests before standing. Therese bowed to the priest before sweeping out of the chapel.
Ambroise will bless me. Therese said to herself. She was her guardian. She had blessed her with little Jon Michel though the boy had never been strong. Therese frowned. After their son had died, Henri had taken up with Marthe Jubert again. Marthe had been a lady-in-waiting to her and she had been shocked when Henri first took her into his bed. But then she remembered how her father had a number of mistresses and fathered countless natural children on them. She didn’t know how her mother, the gracious and strong Queen Isabelle II of Grobe had put up with it. Therese had confronted Henri about it, but all he had said was “A man has his needs, wife. You should be thankful.”
But Therese wasn’t thankful, she was painfully jealous. “How can you do it to me, Henri?” She said aloud.
“Ma’am?” asked Adalina.
Therese shook her head. “I was just thinking aloud it seems.”
Adalina nodded. “You should rest, Your Majesty.”
Therese nodded and lay down on her bed. It was awhile before she closed her eyes, but she finally did. She dreamed of blonde little babies.
