Bernard finished his work for the day and shut down his programs. He checked his files and tidied up his office. He sat back in his chair and pulled up Spider Solitaire. Bernard had some time before he had to drive everyone to their cars in the garage. He organized a car pool after the increase of thefts and muggings in the parking structure and surrounding areas. A group of four or five would leave together, while one person dropped everyone off at their cars.
However, many people’s schedules shifted which caused a change in groups. One of those people was Cathy who normally took Alene to her car. Cathy had a family emergency, so she had to leave early which left her group open. Bernard took the opening, but he didn’t know Alene was in Cathy’s group. He knew that conclusion was foolish since they were close friends, but he thought Alene would join her. He didn’t expect her to work late.
Bernard took a breath and finished another game. The attraction between them was growing. He could feel it extend every day. It didn’t help that Alene was one of the top accountants. He had to talk to her whenever they made a purchase or there was something unfamiliar in the receipts. Alene never missed when Bernard took the office out for lunch and she attended most company functions.
However, he noticed that her flirting increased. Alene continued to dress professionally, but Bernard noticed the way the black pencil skirt hugged her hips. He couldn’t ignore the fitted shirts, heels, or her perfume. Her accessories changed and she fixed her hair a different way each week. Bernard wasn’t naïve. He knew what Alene was doing and he enjoyed it, but he couldn’t respond to it.
Bernard started to flirt back, until a conversation with Albert made him stop. Albert had a point many things were against them. Alene was his employee and it wasn’t very ethical to date. She had a boyfriend and they looked pretty happy, although office gossip said otherwise. Bernard knew much of the gossip was fake, but it gave him some hope. Alene had plans to go back to school, so it was only a matter of time before she was accepted.
There was no evidence that Alene felt the same. Bernard didn’t want to trust in a whim and have his heart broken later on. He could go on about the ways it wouldn’t work, but deep inside he had a feeling it would. Alene kept up with him during discussions. She could hold her own in a conversation about any topic. She beat him in two drinking contests and could work with him.
If Alene wasn’t his employee, he would have asked her out months ago.
Bernard pushed those thoughts aside as he finished another round. A soft knock on the doorframe took him away from his game.
“Yes?”
“Bernard?” Alene walked in with a friendly smile. “We’re finished with our work and we’re all caught up with the receipts. We were wondering if you were ready to go.”
“Yeah I was just killing time that’s all.” She is so pretty when she smiles. Bernard shut off his computer and stood up. He stretched and worked out the kinks in his shoulders and arms. He missed the way Alene looked over him. Bernard let out a relieved breath and grabbed his briefcase.
“Ready?”
“Ready,” Alene nodded and walked out the room.
Bernard resisted the urge to lower his eyes as he followed behind her. He looked over to see Jade and Derek talking with each other while Alene gathered her things. They looked up when Bernard joined them. He smiled and gestured towards the door. “Time to call it a night,”
“So true,” Jade nodded.
“Yeah I’m ready to jump into bed.” Derek yawned.
“Me too,” Alene turned to Bernard with a small smile.
Bernard bit back his response behind a playful smile. “I understand, let’s go.” I’m ready for you to jump in my bed. He pushed that thought back on the way to his car.
*~*~*
Bernard dropped Jade off first. He didn’t know she had a green Taurus. He chuckled at the jokes from Alene and Derek who playfully wished Jade a good night. Derek was next with his black Explorer. The truck was a good match since Derek was a built man and a smaller car wouldn’t fit. They wished Derek a good night with a few jokes and watched him drive away. After Derek left, Alene moved to the front seat. Bernard lightly gripped the steering wheel, but didn’t say much.
They made small talk on the way to her car. T.v shows, games, the new trash reality shows coming on, and everything in between. It wasn’t their normal conversations, but Bernard didn’t want to risk anything. It was too easy to slip up and he was doing so good.
Bernard pulled up to Alene’s blue Impala and nodded. “Nice car,”
“Thanks, I got it four years ago. It’s a pretty good little car.” Alene smiled.
“Yeah, Impalas are good. They can get around pretty well.”
“Yeah, they can,”
Bernard racked his brain for something else to say when silence fell between them.
“Hey, did you know that-upf!”
Alene’s lips put an end to his upcoming statement. Bernard closed his eyes as his defenses fell. It felt so good to kiss her and feel the heat of her body. He wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her close. Alene hummed as she placed her arms around his neck. Their kiss shifted from gentle to heated. It was if a switch went off and they couldn’t get enough of each other.
Bernard asked for entrance as he nipped Alene’s bottom lip. Alene opened her mouth with a small moan as Bernard slipped his tongue in. Their tongues danced around each other as their hands started traveling. Alene slid a hand in his hair as Bernard gripped her behind. Alene moved over to the driver’s seat and settled in his lap. Bernard pulled her close for another kiss.
Bernard rested his hands on her behind as Alene gripped his hair like a lifeline. They kissed again in a flurry of tongues and teeth. Bernard felt he was back in high school having a quick make out session before he took his date home. He could get in trouble or possibly caught, but he didn’t care. The way Alene kissed him back, she didn’t care either.
Bernard moved to touch her chest when Alene moved back and pressed the horn by mistake. The blare snapped them out of their daze. Alene sat back and rested her hands on Bernard’s chest. Bernard looked up, taking in her mussed hair and smeared make up. He resisted the urge to pull her in the backseat and continue what they started.
Alene slid off his lap and moved back to the passenger seat. She grabbed her purse and flashed a smile to Bernard. “Thank you for the ride.”
“You’re welcome,”
“I’ll, um, see you tomorrow.”
“Yeah, have a good night Alene.” He leaned over and placed a light kiss on her lips. He pulled away before he lost control again.
Alene brushed their lips together with a small moan. She unlocked her door and opened it. “Night,”
Bernard saw a longing in her eyes that he was sure was in his own. “Good night Alene.”
Alene smiled and walked to her car. Bernard couldn’t help, but think that seconds ago, she was willing and ready in his lap. It would have been easy to convince her to go back to a hotel or the backseat, but he didn’t want to do it. He wanted to take Alene home and hold her close while he kissed her. His lap had other plans, but he ignored them for now.
Bernard watched Alene back up and stop next to his car. She smiled and blew a kiss before she drove off. Bernard waved back as he took a breath and adjusted his pants.
So much for playing it safe.
