One, two, three...
Heart racing. Pulse pounding. The skin of his eyelids warm brown like wet sand.
Four, five, six...
Wet sand and the rising scent of putridity. A mercenary, a discussion. Blood. Frown; dismiss the memory. Breathe.
Seven, eight...
A footstep. Just one. He forced himself to ignore it. Always braver in his own head; he couldn’t stop the smile. Breathe damnit.
Nine...
His heart finally agreed to remain in place, until: a short cough. A burst of terror, all composure lost. David turned on his heel, hands up and defensive.
Ten.
A mercenary.
“You’re dead!”
“Clearly I’m not.”
