It was the perfect lazy summer day, in Jez’s opinion. Jessie was at one end of the Lockholme family pool teaching a six-year-old Ry how to swim while Stella sat on the side and watched, kicking her feet in the water. Her brothers, Colin and Jon, were as thick as thieves up in the tree house with Bri and Beau while she and Jay floated peacefully in the deeper part of the pool on inflatable rafts after an intense cannon ball contest. Or, at least, they floated peacefully until Jay sat bolt upright and grabbed her raft, almost overturning both of them. Jez yelped. “What??”

“We should make a movie.”

As used to her best friend’s really random outbursts and ideas as she was, this one still caught her by surprise. “Excuse me?” she said, managing to sound halfway polite.

“We should make a movie,” he repeated, beaming at her. “Isn’t it a great idea? Then we could get it published, or whatever you do with a movie, and be famous!”

“I think it costs a lot of money to make a real movie, Jay.”

“So? We’re so talented that it won’t matter.”

She eyed him, still stretched out comfortably on her raft. “I am skeptical, but I have a feeling this is gonna happen whether I like it or not.”

He flashed her a grin and slipped off the raft, dragging it over to the side and clambering out. “Hey, guys! Come down for a minute!”

“I’m not moving,” Jez said.

“Yes, you are. We’re going to be film makers,” he added in reply to an unheard question from the tree house. A moment later, the five boys descended as the three girls in the shallow end all came over too.

“Film makers?” Jessie repeated.

“Yeah, let’s make the next Hollywood hit.”

“Cool,” Stella said.

The other boys exchanged glances and shrugged. “Why not?” Beau said. “We probably need the Opalins, Ren and Mick too.” None of them expected Vlad to participate - at almost 18, he was headed to college in a month and far too busy for their childish games.

“I’ll call Russ,” Jez said with a sigh, slipping off her raft and making for the side.

“I’ll go get Ani and Sorin,” Jess said. “Are we going to need more than that?”

“We might as extras,” Jay said knowledgably, “but for now, just us.”

It took just over an hour for everyone to run home (and for Russ to arrive), change and gather their few missing members before returning to the Lockholme’s yard. Jon looked curious by the gathering, although he was friends with Beau and Kento was friends with Ren, he rarely ended up in the midst of one of their plots. This group had long ago become Colin and Jez’s despite the age range.

“So,” Sorin said, sounding as skeptical as Jez had earlier as he and Ren exchanged glances, “we’re making a movie?”

“Feature film,” Jay said importantly. “We’ll all have parts, but we’ll also need to do other jobs.” He ticked them off on his fingers. “We need a director, a producer, a make-up artist, an animal handler-”

Stella looked around. “For what animals?” she asked and most of them had to squash grins as Jay shot her an evil look.

“A costume designer, a costume finder - that’s a special one just for us - a sound person, a cameraperson or two, an editor, a stage manager, a props person and probably a few other things. Our lead actors won’t have to do double duty unless they want to.”

“Do we have a script?”

“Oh! That’s right, we need a music director and a script writer.”

“We can’t do anything until we have a script,” Ren persisted.

“We can all write the script together. As long as we have a basic plot, ad-libbing should be fine,” Bri said cheerfully.

“And I’m going to do special effects,” Jay announced, shooting his brother a grateful look.

“Special effects? Are those with the animals?” Colin asked, grinning at the baleful glare he received.

Jessie snorted. “Don’t worry, Jay, you know we’re all in. Who wants what job and we’ll do the rest of it by ear.”
