When greeted by a grinning Sethan and Reida seated on one of Ephram’s old chests, Tarek figured something was up, but he wasn’t in the mood to deal with such things today and shuffled on with barely a nod.

Once out of earshot, Reida giggled at Sethan. “That has to be the most idiotic experiment you’ve come up with yet.”

Sethan shrugged. “Under different circumstances, I think it would have worked rather nicely.”

“Yes, a bit less… obstruction.”

The lid beneath them both rattled and the chest squeaked, “Can you talk about it after you let me out of here?”

“Shit, someone’s coming.”

“It’s Tarek.”

“Why did we do this in the yard?”

“Well, I didn’t want to get that all over the lab,” said Sethan, with a wave at the putrid green goo that covered Kairn. “It’s hell to clean up.”

“Gee, thanks.”

“You could have let it go.”

“Right, you want to have to explain it to everyone when it got in the manor? We’re not supposed to have this stuff! And look at me! What am I going to-“

“Get in the chest.” Reida opened the lid.

“Huh?”

“Hold your nose and get in the damned chest.”

“It’s not funny,” said Kairn.

“No,” said Reida. “It’s hilarious.”

Kairn picked a clump of slime from his hair and chucked it at her. It splattered on her arm and she flicked it off with a laugh.

“What was the impact like?” said Sethan, impatiently. “Did we manage to pack as much force as we thought we would?”

“Oh, that is what you’d want to know.”

“Well, I had planned on measuring the trajectory of the blast, but someone had to get in the way.”

“So, what’s it do?” said Reida. “Burn? Sting?”

“I think it just smells bad.”

“Pity.”

“I’d put that down if I were you.”

Kairn froze. The construct writhed in his arms, its rubbery body slipping and sliding and threatening to fall from his grasp with every twist. “When’s it supposed to go-”

Any further words he might have spoken were lost to the construct violently bursting open as if on cue. Thick, green, foul-smelling slime shot from the middle of it into his chest, the force of it sending him staggering backwards a few paces.

He dropped the empty shell of the construct and wiped slime from his eyes. Reida laughed. Sethan shook his head.

“It’s headed for the doors!” Kairn hissed.

“And?” said Reida. “You think it’s going to reach the latch?”

“No, but if someone opens it…”

“That would make matters difficult,” said Sethan, scratching his chin. “Perhaps making it mobile was not such a good idea.”

“Well, now it’s gone in the garden,” said Kairn, and he left his seat to chase after it.

He plucked the construct out of a flower bed and was hurrying back with the squirming sack of green goo tucked against him with both arms, when Reida called, “I’d put that down if I were you.”

The construct scuttled off on its stumpy, mismatched assortment of legs. The thick, dark sludge that filled its rubber bladder of a body swished violently back and forth and sloshed against the sides with every step.

“So,” said Kairn. “When do we see if it works?”

“Three minutes.” Sethan nodded at the jumble of forms scrawled at their feet.

“Then boom,” said Reida, barely above a whisper. Kairn rolled his eyes at her and she snickered.

Sethan shook his head. “More like splat.” The construct carried on with its noisy wet waddling across the dusty yard. “A very loud splat.”

“Life to get it moving.” Sethan slashed a few quick marks in the dirt. “Water for the explosion, with earth for a little extra kick.” Reida snickered. “And air. That’s the timer.”

“But what the hell is it?” Kairn held up what looked to be a rubber bladder. It had been fitted with two rows of boney legs and filled with suspicious green, sludgy contents.

“A little improvement on Master Wil’s bombs,” said Sethan, finishing off his air sigil.

“With a surprise,” said Reida, lifting a bottle with more of the green stuff from the chest. “Care of Master Ephram.”
